    INSAS Rifle, LMG & Carbine

Sterling didn't really start mass production until 1953.

The long barrel does have it's upsides I guess. Do we use rifle grenades, seeing how newer marks on the INSAS doesn't have the barrel ribs for that near the muzzle.

One thing I've always wondered is the relative advantages and/or disadvantages of the 2 most popular UBGL designs against each other. The Russian GP-25 series seems more practical with it's short barrel, unitary caseless rounds and muzzle loading operation, when comparing against the M203 series...

This is good for replacing the 1B Bren in service. But the Mag heritage won't help in making a more compact version for SF usage, unlike the Negev or PKM.

    INSAS Rifle, LMG & Carbine

Maybe there is a very simple reason for this, but since the INSAS was being produced in the 90s, and by then military rifles were using black furnitures, was there a specific reason why the INSAS used bright orange ones ? Doesn't really seem to help camouflage.

This is FN Mag. Called GPMG in UK, Canada, Australia, and Indian service. The below one has a slightly different gas block, and picattiny rail above top cover, but the feed tray and the disintegrating link belt clearly indicates a Mag derivative.

This is what happens when the Finns tweak the AK for their own purpose. The IWI Galil is actually a descendant of this. I would have liked the sights from these on the TAR and Ghatak.

    INSAS Rifle, LMG & Carbine

As Binayak95 mentions, 3 round burst is kind of what happens when your doctrine decides that putting in a mechanical rate limiter is cheaper than letting your soldiers develop better fire control with more range time. It makes the trigger group more complicated than it has to be. Biggest...

Off the top of my head I think I recall that NATO standard is 1 in 175mm. Better data probably can be obtained by using OFB ammo dimensions against Miller or Greenhill formulas, but I'm lazy.

I believe the gas cut-off, and the gas regulator was a holdover from the FNC design. The gas cut-off and the rifle grenade ring behind the muzzle brake wasn't of any use since we don't use any standard rifle grenades I think, but I may be wrong. MK1C makes the design one step closer to the...

    INSAS Rifle, LMG & Carbine

This might be a stupid question, but seeing how the charging handle on the INSAS rifle doesn't reciprocate, what is the operating procedure to force close the bolt if it doesn't close fully cause of fouling or something else ? Is there any "forward assist" equivalent ?

Not to be nitpicky or off-topic, but the locking lug location and the cocking action are actually not tied together, although millions of front lug, cock-on-open mauser actions out there may give that impression. For example, the pattern 1913 enfield rifle has mauser like front lug and big claw...

    INSAS Rifle, LMG & Carbine

This is probably off-topic, but in the wider perspective when discussing about OFB and small arms manufacture, this is an excellent video which provides a sneak peek inside american ordnance factories around the time of WW1.

On the subject of reverse engineering, what would it have been like if ARDE/OFB decided to reverse engineer and iron out the kinks from the HAC-7 battle rifle for our 7.62 NATO rifle requirement ? In theory it's a good rifle, combining AK fire control group and bolt, AR gas tube and upper-lower...

    INSAS Rifle, LMG & Carbine

I understand that OFB actions never really make much sense, but one thing that really bugs me, is the fact that they decided to carbon copy the AK with Ghatak or TAR or whatever. If it's OFB made, and nobody will come asking for license fee, why not improve it ? The least they could do was put...

May not be very effective since the rounds go out with supersonic crack.

50 caliber bullets are not ridiculous for assault rifles. .50 Beowulf and .458 Socom AR15s are readily available. .50 AE and .500 S&W magnum are even handgun cartridges. Now the case sizes are a different story.

    INSAS Rifle, LMG & Carbine

Since OFB is making it, why not use a sturdier or hinged top cover like the INSAS and move the rear sight to the very end and make it a peep/ghost ring type ? AK type sights aren't really conducive to accuracy.
