RDY-3 radar, India specific ICMS Mk2 EW system, and possibly some other India specific avionics. Perhaps some refresh of the airframe too. Also the MiGs will prove to be the best and cheapest test beds for Indian systems. You can't do that with the Mirages. AMCA will enter production in 2035...

Agreed about the Swing role portion, but between now and getting the 2nd hand M2Ks flying in IAF colours with the necessary upgrades, it'll take a couple of years IMO. Between now and then, Astra Mk1 and Mk2 mounted MiG 29s have good credibility purely for air interdiction purposes. Not to...

MiG 29s can't do A2G strikes as good as an M2K can. MiG 29s are getting top weapon systems and EW now. They are a cheap good CAP responder. Between now and the end of the decade as long as they have a good radar, EW, and long range A2A weapons they are doing their job. Not more than that. Else...

MiG 29s are used at Ladakh for good reason. Very high TW ratio and hence quick to respond early in an A2A engagement. Also MiG 29s can carry the full complement of Indian weapons and electronics. Cant say so about the Mirage 2000.

Blame the delayed LCA program and the archaic acquisition process.

This is a good time to strike a deal. Morocco doesn't have exp with the mirage 2000 and the plane is no longer made. Egypt has a tiny fleet largely unupgraded. India will be the best customer for the entire UAE Mirage 2000 fleet. Will give us a couple of squadrons. That combined with the...

This is correct. For CAS ops the aircrew are vectored by forward air controllers. A tank in theory can do that job if its a CAS command post, but that defeats the purpose of the tank in the first place. A tank should ideally be able to designate a target and pass the details to the FAC team to...

No need for balle balle. He is being given a tour of the aircraft, and possibly informed about certain ways in which the yahoods have used it in ops and the capabilities it offers. It doesn't mean we are procuring them, and the Indian S400 means the US will not sell them.

India has spent a lot of resources on the Jaguar. It'll be a shame if it can't be re-engined. Worst case if the re-engining doesn't happen then our options are 72-108 Rafales as envisioned and more MiG 29s. If older 29 airframes are not available then maybe MiG 35s in MKI standard until MWF...

Probably because the Jaguars will start getting replaced. With MiG 21 phaseout in another 5 years (replaced by LCA Mk1 and Mk1A), the Jaguars are all set to be replaced by the LCA Mk2.

I'm talking about replacement. Honeywell F125IN was the engine of choice and RR backed out leading to single vendor situation. Hence plan was junked.

Will the Jaguars be re-engined at all?

Few points: 1> ORCA is imminent. 2> India will have 7 combat aircraft offerings: a> LCA Mk1, b> LCA Mk1A, c> LCA Mk2, d> TEDBF, e> AMCA Mk1, f> AMCA Mk2, g> ORCA 3> Stitching an anti China military alliance with these is key. For poor countries the Mk1 is an option. For the low-mid range the...

The operative line here is " Very few countries make large aerial refuellers." They are able to do so because they have a formidable domestic aviation industry. Especially commercial aircraft industry. You can't stick 20 Su-30MKIs with Fevicol and expect them to serve the role of a tanker. It...

Here are my 2 cents to augment aerial force multipliers for the Indian Air Force in quick time: 1> Immediately order 5 more Netra aircraft. 2> Immediately purchase 2 A340 aircraft (quad engines) and convert them to flying test beds. Any and every component of a jet that can be tested on this...
