    And another thing. Scientists don't control the funding. If they did, I'm sure there'd be many projects based on curiosity. But the funds are controlled by bureucrats. So yes, they are very result and goal oriented.

    I read your list lol. It's funny you think they're funding LHC for pure curiosity. If something comes out of it, you'll have to eat your hat when you see the scramble such will be similar to when Steam power was discovered.

    Okay, since you have so much jaankaari. Tell us 5 scientific endeavour any govt around the world took on simple curiosity without an end goal in mind to benefit the citizens or themselves. Monarchies don't count. Go.

    Govt funds research and development with an end goal in mind. There is not simple curiosity, but a desire to better lives of their citizens. Private citizens, entities, and organisations can and often do fund for curiosity.

    Industrial expansion works only through an economy of scale. To mine a celestial body successfully, we'd need: cheap inter-planetary transport, cheap space crew who can double as highly skilled specialists like engineers, biologists, cheap bio-habitats, forces to protect these investments, etc...

    There hasn't been an Antarctica Part 1 in the first place. What he means is that the cost of extraction is still much higher than the value generated from it.
