There was some talk about how MoD is considering moving to L1+T1 (I think that is what it was called). Basically a system that ranks minimum requirement qualifying vendors based on not just budgetary but also on technical specifications of their product. That would remedy what you are saying...

Well, any RFI and RFP has an entire questionnaire, all the parameters that Navy lists need to be replied to in detail. RFI states what minimum Navy wants and then in its reply the vendor answers what it can provide, sometimes they even offer extra over and above what Navy asks. But there are no...

BTW, FSS was on the latest import ban list, right? Is it because even though the design is Turkish we are building in our shipyards? Or is it because we are dropping the Turkish design?

Well, Shtil would be replaced by VL-SRSAM eventually and maybe the Russians were (as usual) asking for some exorbitant sum of money to effectuate any design changes in the ship? This might have forced Navy to go ahead with arm launchers for now and replace it with VL-SRSAM post-delivery. On...

Yeah, private firms doing it is the only hope. Hopefully private firms gain the appetitie for such strategic investments. Right now they seem mostly R&D averse.

Good idea but its against our foreign policy na. Govt won't do that. We aren't even able to get PIOs who are doing critical R&D for USA military industrial complex back to us. That alone is a gold mine far more valuable than poaching Russians scientists (especially when we have already started...

With the way Russians fleece us, I take issue with most who say Hindi-Roosi bhai bhai.

I have no idea what all else they removed. Till the day she was commissioned, I was under the false belief that she'll have 4 SRGM and 64 Barak-8.

Maybe they rolled over that to the next refit due to lack of budget.

I think they'll replace both Barak-1 as well as Shtil SAM with VL-SRSAM. Although if CMS on Delhi class can be replaced with the new CMS Tata developed, it might be a good idea to put Barak-8 in place of the Shtil SAM in Delhi class.

Well, we did see VL-SRSAM tested from a Rajput class destroyer not so long ago. But these ships are about to retire. So its more than likely just for testing purposes, not operationally deployed.

Agreed. Just that adding VL-ASROC or maybe (wacky idea) SMART on it will make it even more effective IMHO. Actually, SMART is a bad idea because these ships would be providing ASW screen for the rest of the fleet and so they will encounter enemy submarines quite close to them, thereby making...

Kamorta class has low accoustic signature. Its got the task of screening a fleet from enemy submarine presence and its good at that job. This it can do with its hull mounted and towed sonar arrays as well as its onboard helicopter using sonar dipping. It can use onboard helicopter or its heavy...

But we don't need that many just yet. Remember, the Chinese likely won't have enough carriers to spare one for Indian Ocean sorties anytime before 2035. And no other competition of ours in IOR even has carriers. So having just two carriers operational at all times: one for superiority over Pak...

Better, send that CBG forward and try and take out the Chinese fleet's carrier (even disturbing it will do). If you can take out the Chinese carriers in war, the Andaman and Nicobar islands will be able to defend themselves almost indefinitely.

Take out with what ammunition when its all expended and the supply lines from the mainland are cut because the Indian fleet was sunk? We say fighters and missiles from the islands make them an unsinkable carrier but this unsinkable carrier can't maneuver and the worst of all, its unsinkability...

Wasn't JS Izumo undergoing refit for F-35B ops? Carrier conversion? Did they already complete that?

While I don't think that the Cruiser retirements will push USN down to IN ship numbers, this still presents India with a problem because now that PLAN fleet buildup is starting to catch up to USN fleet numbers (with the latter falling), it will mean PLAN will have more ships to spare for IOR...

Aircraft carriers aren't the same argument. A supercarrier gives you a higher sortie generation rate and carries many more aircraft. So it makes sense to have them built up to that size. . But see, we don't get 200,000 ton or even 150,000 ton carriers. Do we? No. Because beyond that, they don't...
