    INS Vikrant Aircraft Carrier (IAC)

The problem is not just that. Because slippages are the norm, there is no incentive to figure out realistic, conservative timelines. In this case, of course the operationalisation of Vikrant was way too delayed, but that plan he quoted about having a 3rd carrier by 2015 was made up someone on...

    INS Vikrant Aircraft Carrier (IAC)

True, and I suspect the navy would prefer to have the third proper aircraft carrier, nuclear subs and even minehunters ahead of those LHDs

And all this time I thought I was a dry patch of land in Rajasthan with Sunny paji striding around with his angry face and Jackie Sheriff going "yeh shubah kyun nahin Hoti"

    INS Vikrant Aircraft Carrier (IAC)

It took the Cholas 80-100 to reach a stage where they had the most powerful navy in the Indian Ocean. In half that time, India will go from a pathetic small, brown water navy to the third strongest naval force in the entire world, with 3-4 carriers, nuclear subs, LHDs, large destroyers etc

Rafale M? We could get a few used from France fairly quickly I would assume

    INS Vikrant Aircraft Carrier (IAC)

This is a slightly weird thing to be discussing in this topic. But I would suspect the truth lies somewhere in between - there was a lot of French tech and research involved, but also a great deal of research sharing between different NATO nations, and not just US to others but vice versa. That...

    INS Vikrant Aircraft Carrier (IAC)

Dumb question. But, as I see close to half of the aitcraft are carried on deck and the hangers would not be able to accommodate all aircraft even in bad weather Would it therefore be possible to carry say a dozen Rafales or f-18s on the deck full time I appreciate any major repairs such as an...

    INS Vikrant Aircraft Carrier (IAC)

Speaking as a non military, I wish you were right. But all the signs, especially the fact that IN are so eager for another jet despite the logistics advantages of simply ordering more Mig-29s suggests that Abingdonboy is correct, whatever his sources might be. Which is a pity but only in...

Give joy rides to Rahul Gandhi and family I guess

    INS Vikrant Aircraft Carrier (IAC)

Got that , apologies was unclear. I am talking about fixing those problems if we went for a new batch of mig-29s for Vikrant

    INS Vikrant Aircraft Carrier (IAC)

Which should be fixable on a new tranche, strengthening of that part of the structure, the 29 has enough thrust to cope with slight increase in weights What is worrisome is the engine failures, which given how long back they were designed suggests a more unsolvable problem. The only blessing is...

    INS Vikrant Aircraft Carrier (IAC)

Pretty evident based on specs mig-29 is the best choice as a standardised aircraft for India's Stobar carriers. The question is how poor availability rates are currently, it's a pity the Russians involved in the whole Gorshkov package were such a bunch of idiots really.

    INS Vikrant Aircraft Carrier (IAC)

Which is curious, considering those complaints about its reliability earlier. Which implies either a major fu or the navy was much more confident about the mig 29k by the mid 2010s in which case might as well get some more of the same, cheaper and simpler logistics...

    INS Vikrant Aircraft Carrier (IAC)

Thanks. It's a pity, ideal course of action imho would be to print out a couple more Vikrants to quickly build up a fleet of 4 carriers, saves cost and time rather than building a new bespoke carrier. But at the same time, would be preferable to have a common fighter jet across IAF and IN...

    INS Vikrant Aircraft Carrier (IAC)

Any idea how effective naval rafale would be as a stobar aircraft - say if we just build a slightly larger copy of Vikrant instead if a completely new design

    INS Vikrant Aircraft Carrier (IAC)

So the mug-29k are primarily for the Vikramadiya while IAC-1 would utilise the 2nd catch of 57 jets. Ideally should be a mix of high end Rafale and additional, cheaper Mig-29k (assuming reports that initial problems being solved are true)
