May be not 5 years. May be just 3 because the 2 missiles use the same frame so no need of new flight tests to integrate the missile to the fighter (exactly the way French develop MICA NG with the legacy MICA frame).

ASTRA mk2 is a dual engine missile. ie a second motor burn is selected when the target is very near, so as to keep so more kinetic energy to the missile. It increases the NEZ.

PL15 is a 200+ kg missile. Impossible to compare such a heavy AA missile to a medium one, as ASTRA or ASTRA 2

This is the MK3. What is the status of MK2 (dual powder booster if I'm well) ?

against a slow moving target as a tanker or against a 9G fighter ? That is the main question. My 22LR rifle bullet can reach 1,5km. But with so less enegy it can't hurt a cat.

You are totally right. A classical booster missile max speed only occurs a couple of seconds. The average speed is far less (due to aerodynamic friction even in high altitude). Meteor is selled as Mach4+ , but as the engine burnt all flight long (may be not at full power...) the average speed is...

What are the Mach 5 or 5+ BVR missiles ?
  8. BON PLAN

    Astra BVRAAM

PL15 with 200km... Why not. But what about the NEZ? 40km? The max range means nearly nothing.
  9. BON PLAN

    Astra BVRAAM

sure not. There is no mathematical link between max range (a totally useless data because in this case it is no more a missile but a rocket...) and NEZ. Meteor and AMRAAM are in the same weight class, in the 160kg. Meteor has not to carry its oxidizer (air breathing), and has a NEZ of 60km...

The NL, Belgium and... so one F16 from early production batchs, after MLU, were able to fire AMRAAM.

    Astra BVRAAM

NEZ of MICA is less than 30km. So is AMRAAM C7. 30km is maybe possible for AMRAAM D.... As already said, the max range is very theorical : fired from a plane at what altitude?, at what speed?, range mesured when the missile at the end of its semi ballistical trajectory reach the ground? (ie...

    Astra BVRAAM

This is a max range, in a near ballistical trajectory with quite no energy left for manoeuvring. Maybe potent against a civil airliner, in a straight flight... The No Escape Range of such a missile is more in the 25km range.
  13. BON PLAN

    Astra BVRAAM

Is it so sure? It was said that the AMRAAM were fired from too away, with nearly no pk possible.
  14. BON PLAN

    Astra BVRAAM

There is a link between max range and NEZ range, for a booster technology. (ie comparing single impulse booster missiles with similar one, comparing dual pulse booster missile to same tech, comparing stato engine missile with same tech)
  15. BON PLAN

    Astra BVRAAM

The range of a missile is never given with the proper precisions : fired from a plane cruising at what speed? et what altitude? the range was mesured when the missile hit the ground having loss all its energy?...
  16. BON PLAN

    Astra BVRAAM

    ??? there is a link.
  17. BON PLAN

    Astra BVRAAM

    1500 to 2000 in 10 years. Ie 150 to 200/year. Quite realistic.
  18. BON PLAN

    Astra BVRAAM

Not really. MICA is 50G able for exemple.
  19. BON PLAN

    Astra BVRAAM

Tejas carrying Meteor, even a single one, it is Sci Fi !

I think the main difference between RAMJET and SCRAMJET is that in the first one the air flow speed is reduce so as to be subsonic before injecting the fuel (the missile can be subsonic or supersonic). For the SCRAMJET the air flow remains supersonic (so the missile is supersonic or hypersonic)...
