Even the first Polaris boomers contained 16 missiles with 48 warheads with a range of 4,600km. Arihant can only carry 12 warheads with a range of 750km. That is nowhere comparable to even the first generation of boomers. The best use of Arihant is to ditch nuclear weapons and put Brahmos and...

It meets the basic definition of the word but it is really just a technology demostrator. The real SSBNs are coming later. The best use of it is as an SSN.

10 years ago this is what the Office of Naval Intelligence published... So it is reasonable to assume that Chinese nukes are loud enough to alter the migration patterns of dolphins. Clearly Japan had no problem detecting them... Even Vietnamese fishing boats can catch them.

What do you think the Arihant is? For India to take its place among the defence producers of the world it must replace someone in the current order of producers. To compete against the likes of the US and France is not the place you start, knocking out Russia and China from the competition is...

Indian shipbuilding is the one gem among the defence industry that is self sufficient and they have ruined it by overpaying for Russian junk instead of placing domestic orders.

India already builds nuclear submarines. Leasing them from Russia at 3X the cost of a new one and to only get it for 10 years??? Any why is India buying Talwar frigates at 3X the original cost when they already make better frigates? The Gorshkov should have been the biggest scandal in India's...

Considering it only costs a billion for a new one then I agree, to pay three billion is absurd.

Russia doesn't want it back. They leased it because it was a surplus equipment they didn't have the budget to operate. The budget situation has not gotten any better and they have a new class replacing them. The money India pays is funding Russia's equipment plan.

All it takes is one underpaid sailor to spill the beans. The people that work their know and I doubt they are getting paid Western wages, flash some cash and someone will talk. Indian media is not the most careful when it comes to guarding national secrets. The source may even come from some...

Unless you have submarine pens there isn't much to hide as any observation sat can see. On Ile Longue we have two pens for four SNLE so it is hard to guess who is where doing what. Phase II of Project Varsa is finally underway and India can have a secret nuke base, but not really so secret. The...

    Indian nuclear submarines

It is not better to appear weaker than you are. It is the show of strength that prevents wars, it is weakness that starts them. I doubt GoI has the goal of appearing weak especially with China as a neighbour with designs on your territory.

I only know what has been reported. The only two nuke subs in the fleet met with preventable accidents costing tens of millions in damage and major down times for both. Why would the existence of a nuke sub be a secret? We know well how many France, USA, Russia even China has. You would...

    Indian nuclear submarines

Nobody is really in the mood to talk about it after they left the hatch open to flood the engine room on Arihant. Then the Chakra ran aground. I can't say I am surprised no one has much to say.

    Indian nuclear submarines

Am I really supposed to believe that someone was dumb enough to leave a hatch open and it flooded at its harbour? The sea state in a protected mooring does not rock a massive ship like that enough to cause that kind of flooding.

This is a clear message to Russia that their assistance to Chi-Pak will not be tolerated. If Russia wants to keep India as a partner they must follow the strategic relationship by not aiding her enemies.
