    The USAF didn't have BVR missiles then! The Air-Air missile technology was at infancy during Vietnam war. What the USAF had in Vietnam were the AIM-4, AIM-7, and AIM-9 Air to Air missiles. You can't compare them with modern BVR missiles like the R-77, AAM-4B, Astra, Derby,K-100 etc.
