    Our tax collections are only 5% of GDP. So a military expense of 2.5% of GDP is quite significant. Greater expense is possible only with greater tax collection. However that seems difficult in the current economic climate.

    China is doing what is right for it. India MUST do what is right for it. India has plenty of potential to respond to external threats. I believe that India is still weak internally. The internal challenges are causing external weakness.

    We have built a "socialist" polity after independence, and socialism weakens the State. Unless politics changes, do not expect a strong India. Wealth is also driven by politics. Wealth cannot be protected if security is weak. Everything is interconnected.

    Let us wait for the budget. It is just a few days away. However it is true that money is tight. Tax collections are not up to mark and international environment is getting dicey. The only way is to do more with less money.
