Duck eggs cost more and so the contractor would not like to go at a loss. Further, duck eggs are not what the troops are accustomed to. I don't have the SRS with me and so I don't remember the nomenclature of eggs. Imagine getting ostrich eggs or even that of a crow!

I have hardly seen Ducks given in the rations. Actually, as per the SRS (Schedule of Ration Scale) the nomenclature is 'Fowl Dressed' or 'Fowl Whole'. And in that classification and type of Fowl can be given.

That photo appears to be of a 'tasting plate', wherein some portions of what has been cooked is laid out in that plate and the Duty Officer/ Duty JCO/ Company Commander tastes the food to check the taste and if there is adequate condiments used and so on.

Tasty food? Taste is an acquired phenomenon. I love caviare, but the whole family hates it! As the nursery rhyme goes: Some like it hot, some like it cold Some like it in the pot, nine days old! :)

@Bilal, Good to see you relocate from Chennai to Islamabad! ;) Interesting to know you have tasted ham! Jinnah is said to have loved it since he was a Westernised Oriental Gentleman! Deer has a rather odd smell of grass and plants. There is a culinary name for such a smell that I seem to...

All animal flesh are prone to worms. It would be incorrect a belief that chicken is safe. Here is why: Infection by intestinal parasitic worms (geohelminths) is widespread throughout the world, affecting hundreds of millions of people. Children are particularly susceptible and typically have...

Pork is as safe/ unsafe as any other type of meat. The unit piggeries used to breed Yorkshire pigs. These are what is known as the 'dump' pigs that forage in the muck and are unhygienic.

Pork was popular with some troops like the Gurkhas. Many units had their own piggery. It was a great supplement to the rations. But the Govt banned it (unit run piggery) because of an overall communal requirement in the country. Quite a stupid order actually. It upset the Gurkhas for sure...

You had to wear hospital pyjamas and top? Were you admitted in the OR ward? Hospital food, whether you are in the Officers' Ward or elsewhere seems no good since you are too sick (unless you are a malingerer). They have to ensure that you get the type of food that the doctors ordered and...

Well not in my unit which I visited in March 2012. But we must be different because we are a PVC Battalion ! ;) And surprisingly, unlike the photo, the patilas were never in Stainless Stee. Though in the JCOs' Mess they were having been bought by the JCOs' through their Mess cuttings.

Those patilas are too small to feed 120 people of the company!

Indian Army Cookhouse Menu or fancily written as 'Daily Fare' is always vague. It is Chawal Roti Sabzi When as a Company Commander I insisted that more details of what is the Dal or Sabzi, the answer of the Langer Commander was 'Kuch Pata nahin kia CQMH issue karega'. In a way he...

It is not only the intake of food that reduces, but you feel sick at the sight of food and every thing appears unpalatable! Imagine people not wanting Almonds, Pine Nuts, Cashewnuts, Raisin Brown, Salted Ground Nuts, Cadbury chocolate bar, Tetra pack Fruit Juice, Cherry, Pineapple etc! 15...

Yes. High Altitude rations is way different. I will search my archives and see if I can fish that out. It is good, but there is no appetite that one could eat the same. High Altitude kills the appetite! And every thing has to be pressure cooked!
