Philippines refuses to return Chinese boats

Manila: The Philippine government has refused to return the 25 Chinese vessels that were taken in the South China Sea (also known as the West Philippine Sea) and the case is to be resolved with the help of a third party, a local paper said.

"The disposition of the small boats will be in accordance with a legal process," Philippine Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert Del Rosario told the Star.

China has urged the Philippine government to respect the recently concluded China-Vietnam Joint Statement, in which they agreed to work bilaterally to resolve their disputes over contested claims within the South China Sea.

The China-Vietnam agreement should be used as a model in resolving disputes in the South China Sea, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Liu Weimin told the Star, a hint that China does not want multilateral dialogue in resolving its disputes with the Philippines over contested claims in the South China Sea.

Peña said their BRP Rizal, while traversing some 25 nautical miles south of Marie Louise Bank of the West Philippine Sea for its routine patrol mission, lost control and rammed through a Chinese fishing fleet which in included a mother ship and 35 motorized dinghies. Right after the accident, the mother ship fled and cut off lines to the smaller boats being towed.

He added, "The Chinese boat just abandoned the small boats. It appeared it got scared. They were supposed to be checked which is usual since they are within Philippine waters. The mother Chinese fishing boat immediately left, leaving the small boats it was towing."

So not only are they foolish but they are also cowardly.

Does anybody think China compensates their fishermen for the loss of their boats? I would hope so.

Once India mustered up the courage to ask PRC to back off from South China Sea, other countries are standing up to the bully.

One must, however, give full credit to Vietnam for taking up the challenge of a war with PRC.

Philippines is one of the incosequential small countries in ASEAN that Adux like to point out contemptuously. Mind you the BRP Rizal that rammed the Chinese vessels is even of WW2 vintage!

While Indians like to rave about their high tech gadgets against China, smaller SEA countries are already fighting Goliath China with next to nothing equipments. The next question, how can India exploit the obvious differences between China and these small inconsequential countries? Can it exploit it?

I have been to the Philippines, Zamboanga City, in Mindanao island, and I have seen Philippine Navy equipments, and boy they are old. They have LST and patrol ships from WW2, patrol crafts from Vietnam war, they're old. But there was a time when the Philippines was the strongman of the ASEAN. We used to fear them. Their F5s would frequently intrude our territory (Sabah, which they used to claim), but that was before. Now, the aggressive territorial posturing between us has been replaced by a reasonable understanding of our common interests. We no longer are at odds and the Sabah issue is not anymore raised by the Philippine side.

China is galvanizing us now.

They have impounded the boats as per international law.

Law, however, may not be in the Chinese vocabulary!

Maybe to the Chinese law means Apna hath Jagannath!

Good Job, Philippines, Though they have the safety of the US nuclear military power, it was the right thing to do. We need to send them some Brahmos along with Vietnam. Time to throw some weapons around.

Actually, their MDT is slightly put into question since the US is viewing the matter as a territorial dispute. In other words it is not clear at all if the Philippines indeed is entitled to the zone it is claiming in the Spratlys. But just the same the Philippines is chugging ahead against bully China.

Now, there's something that India can do, it can recognize the territorial claim of the Philippines against China in the Spratlys... Can India do this?

SEA region is hotbed of future politics. the future war or conflict lies in this region only as this is the connecting lane for trade.

India should side by SEA countries with caution and side by them only when it gives India some bargain chips to trade with chinese for more control in south asia( Indian sub-continent)

Good job Philippines,
but Veitnam is counting on India and Russia, but if China attacks Vietnam, no Russia or India would help them, as they both have their own reservations and benefits.

No India will not do that. Spratlys are claimed by multiple countries. India cannot chose from one of those except for china which does not count. Vietnam, Malaysia, Phiipines are all within our plans for the future. For me it is Vietnam that has to win the spratlys as far as Indian interests go.

I absolutely second that. Why should India get into someone else's quarrels if India has nothing to gain out of it? Also, if India gets to gain out of any one, India should back that country or stay neutral.
