Gorky cannot carry 24 Mig-29Ks per se because we haven't ordered that many in the first place. I guess the fleet complement will be 12 Mig-29Ks, perhaps 2+2 Mig-29KUBs which fulfill tanker roles and maybe even a mini- AWACS role apart from the 10 Helos. This may again be complemented by 6 LCA Mk2s which have been ordered. So, 20 aircraft at best and 12 at worst. I guess 20 aircraft may eat up the helos numbers.

The first 16 Mig-29s ordered are meant for Gorky. Gorky can technically carry 30-32 aircraft. The Kiev class carried 12 fighters and 20 helicopters. So, vice versa can apply here.

Vikrant will have the second batch of 29 Mig-29ks. How many on deck and how many out of 29 are trainers are unknown, but minimum 24 Migs on deck. No LCA orders have been placed as of now for the Vikrant, only 6 have been ordered. Vikrant can carry 40 aircraft and will obviously see more fighters than Gorky.

So, 1 squadron of Mig-29s and half a squadron of LCA on Gorky with 10 Helos. 2 squadrons of Mig-29 on Vikrant along with 10-15 helos. More on IAC-2, perhaps ~60. AFAIK, Mig-29KUBs don't have radars, so no mini-AWACS role as of today.

Varyag is far superior to the Gorky and can carry 50 aircraft. Varyag may be a TD rather than a fully operational aircraft carrier, at least initially. So, we can wait for China to reveal the one being constructed. Gorky will carry the more capable J-15 as compared to the same number of Mig-29s Vikrant will carry. However the overall advantage lies with India because we have employed carriers in numerous wars for over 60 years apart from the fact that we will have 2 carriers against their 1. A China US comparison is moot. What USN is today, China and India can only hope to be after 20 or 30 years realistically. USN won't remain sitting still in the meanwhile.

It will take years operationalizing them. You can bet the first home made carrier is still some ways off.

P2P !! Chinese are capable of working overtime!!! I suspect china joined hands to see that Gorshakov will not arrive in time,so that by the time it arrives varyag will be patrolling from BOB,indian ocean,Arabean sea to African coast encouraging somali pirates to capture more and more Indian origin sailors.

Building a carrier is one thing and operationally employing in a nation's doctrine is another. One can double MKIs production by doubling assembly lines and working overtime but one cannot prove a doctrine in just a year or two no matter how hard you work.

Varyag will never leave the East and South China Sea for at least 5 years after commission. It is a given. It takes a long time building an air sea doctrine and they may need a war to prove it unlike a single platform which can be proven after some exercises. It took 10 years of exercises to validate the MKI as well. Likewise, it will take us 5-10 years to validate the Cold Start with the F-INSAS concept. There is a difference in having technology and using it.

Why do you think I don't like the LCA program? Once an aircraft is inducted it will take at least 5 to 10 years before we can call it a proven aircraft. It's been 2 years since we have had our Phalcons, but from what I gather it has still not been properly tested and validated in our environment. So, it is not yet operational in the strictest sense. For eg: We have massive air assets in the exercise that took place, but no AWACS in it. AWACs is nothing compared to the complexity of aircraft carriers. The Chinese have Zero experience in it.

The Chinese have little or no influence over Russian defence projects, especially the Sevmash shipyard. We are getting our nuke sub, aren't we? You can say the Russians tricked us intentionally or unintentionally in order to secure the Gorky deal. Once it was known Gorky will be delayed IN decided to add new things to the Gorky which increased costs.

They won't operate their carrier in IOR. They have to validate it's use where it matters, in the East China Sea. Right now we have a carrier in the Red Sea. Also, about the Indian sailors thing, that is just conspiracy. They are hurt more by piracy than we are financially.

If more Indian sailors are captured then we get a stronger say in the politics of the region. So, it is counterproductive to the Chinese influence. Heck we can even go the extra step by running operations inside Somalia to save our citizens.

Agreement on the modernization of the aircraft carrier - one of the largest in the history of military-technical cooperation between the two countries.

Now the ship is on the waterfront, "Sevmash", which was transferred from the inlet basin of the plant in 2008 to load the new equipment with the help of a powerful crane technology. "Transmission of the ship to the customer will be December 4, 2012, the day of the Indian Navy," - said Novoselov.

Before that, he said, the aircraft carrier will be the full range of tests, and the first outlet to the sea, reportedly scheduled for late May next year. "Vikramaditya" will be released into the sea for the first time in more than 20 years .

Originally planned to transfer the ship to the customer in 2008, but due to the increase in the amount of work deadlines repeatedly shifted. The new contract amount is $ 2.3 billion and is in addition to the signed agreement in 2004. On the ship will be based MiG-29K fighters and Ka-27 and Ka-31.

Heavy aircraft-carrying cruiser "Admiral Gorshkov" (up to October 4, 1990 cruiser called "Baku") was built in Hikolaeve. In December 1987, included in the Northern Fleet. In early February 1992 raised for repairs in Murmansk, after which the sea did not come out.

The Hindu : News / National : Navy to get overhauled Gorshkov by year-end

"The delivery will take place on December 4, the Indian Navy Day," Sevmash Shipyard Deputy CEO Sergei Novosyolov told the RIA Novosti news agency. The 45,000-tonne Gorshkov was now undergoing mooring trials and would begin sea runs at May-end, RIA Novosti said. It entered service in 1987, but was inactivated in 1996 for lack of funds in post-Soviet Russia.
