Veteran filmmaker Yash Chopra died at Mumbai's Lilavati Hospital on Sunday, a hospital spokesperson said. He was 80. Chopra was admitted to Lilavati hospital in suburban Bandra on October 13 after being diagnosed with dengue. Chopra had announced his retirement from film direction last month.

The filmmaker was looking forward to the release of his upcoming romantic movie Jab Tak Hai Jaan which stars Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma in the lead. It is set to release on November 13.

In his over five decade old career, Chopra has made several hits like Deewar, Trishul, Chandni, Silsila, Veer Zaara and others.

Dengue seems to hit people in Delhi as of now. Be careful, it a deadly disease if not identified early.

Yash Chopra Dies At 80

Director Yash Chopra, 80, has died in Mumbai of multiple organ failure.

Mr Chopra was admitted to Mumbai's Lilavati Hospital on October 13 with dengue fever. On October 17, he was reported to have improved and was expected to be discharged soon.

"He passed away due to dengue and multiple organ failure today evening. He was in the ICU," Lilavati Hospital spokesperson Dr Sudhir told PTI.

An official statement from Yash Raj Films, the production company founded by Mr Chopra, said: It is with deep regret that we announce the sad demise of Mr. Yash Chopra, who breathed his last at around 5:30 PM today. Details of his last rites will be communicated to all a little later.

Mr Chopra will be cremated at 3pm on October 22 at south Mumbai's Pawan Hans crematorium.

Mr Chopra's 22nd film, Jab Tak Hai Jaan starring Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma, will release this Diwali.

Yash Chopra directed films like Deewar, Silsila, Kabhi Kabhie and Lamhe in his five-decade long career. His production company, Yash Raj Films, produced films such as Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, Bunty Aur Babli and Mohabbatein.

In an interview with Shah Rukh Khan on his 80th birthday, Mr Chopra had announced his retirement from directing, saying that Jab Tak Hai Jaan would be his last film.

Mr Chopra is survived by his wife Pamela and two sons Aditya and Uday.

Actors like Shah Rukh Khan, Dilip Kumar and Anil Kapoor, all directed by Mr Chopra, arrived at Lilavati Hospital as news of the director's death broke.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh posted this condolence message on Twitter: Prime Minister pays tribute to film-maker Yash Chopra-"An icon of Indian Cinema, he entertained many generations with his rare creativity."

Colleagues from Bollywood have also mourned Mr Chopra's death on Twitter.

Amitabh Bachchan tweeted: Yash Chopra passes away .. Just now a hour ago.

"Just as I was getting over the grief of my daughter, my brother Yash Chopra Bhaisaab has left me. Sad year," said Asha Bhosle.

RIP to the man who had more Swiss Visa stamps on his passport than any other Indian.
