Would India want to get involved in this mess?

as far as nuclear civil plants are concerned, India has no problem with them acquiring till the time it is being put to use for civilian purpose and if it is coming from Russia we really do not have any problems with it, most of the places where Russia is involved, India diplomacy is reasonably comfortable till the time the other party of course is prc of Pakistan. with the present government in Bangladesh, India for the moment is reasonably assured that we have a non-hostile neighbor. our concern about this country is if they are made into a radical society like the one in Pakistan and for the moment we are working with groups in that country who do not want such a thing to happen, will we be successful, only time will tell but surely there are sings emerging that have us worried.

Let us all hope you are right Thakur

To me it is just one more problem that "your friend" Russia is creating to make money.

Civilian nuke agreement has no security bearing esp from a country like Bangladesh which has no wherewithal of nuke technology. Russia will supply safeguarded reactors, take back the spent fuel. Bangaldesh has no expertise in reprocessing any fuel and converting it to weapons grade.

Over and above that, Bangladesh does not have the money to maintain a nuke weapons program nor does it have any stated policy of acquiring any nuclear weapons.

You keep talking in the present tense Yusuf like everyone on here does. What is ten years to bring. Bangladesh enriches uranium? India gives financial aid in exchange for shutting down plants? Like is happening in North Korea?

They will help if India stops flirting with Russia, buying their cheap second rate military junk and start buying from the West.

sailor,
you are unnecessarily worried about BD going nuclear or India supporting the formation of Eelam. Both are not feasible nor are they in India's interest. India will not allow BD to go nuclear nor BD has the ambition or ability to go nuclear. Period. Any more discussion on BD going nuclear is frankly a waste of time.
As far as Eelam is concerned, once the LTTE is wiped out completely along with its commander Prabhakaran, then the Eelamists will lose steam. All the talk of supporting the Eelam by the Indian-Tamil politicians is simply election posturing and not to be taken seriously. India wants and will actively work for equal status for Tamilian Civilians in united Sri Lanka. The constitution of SL will have to be amended and India will play its role in ensuring that justice is done to Tamils of Sri Lanka.
BTW, the rout of LTTE wouldnt have been possible without the direct/indirect help from India. So, that proves that india is not for Eelam. Formation of Eelam is not in the interest of India. But, India will most certainly stand by the innocent Tamil civilians of SL to ensure that they will get the equal status in SL this time unlike the past.

Breaking Pakistan in 71 was not a mistake, but perhaps creation of BD was. Anyway, lets not delve in past.

Mate, its not just the present but also the future. Bangladesh is not a country with a great industrial base. Even Pakistan is not. It Borrowed and Stole nuke knowhow and material. Bangladesh is a poor country. It cannot even think of going nuclear. Besides how will it reprocess the fuel, when the contract with Russia will be to send back spent fuel?

As far as India is concerned, the only security issue with relation to Bdesh is the terrorist infrastructure out there and the terrorists operating from there.

You are giving far more credit to Bdesh than it deserves in the field of nuclear knowhow and industrial ability.

Well you have to bring Cuba back into the equation. America faced down Russia about putting stuff there. Are you sure that India can face down Russia in the future? Because it might come to that.
Building a nuclear plant in Bangladesh came as a shock today and shouldn't be written off so flippantly Yusuf.

Mate as a signatory of the NPT, Bdesh is well within its right to set up nuclear power plants for electricity just like all others. Russia is setting it up for money, not for strategic reasons as it did in Cuba.

The Cuba equation came into play when you thought of the idea of Pakistan setting up missiles in Bdesh.

Was just reading up. Bangladesh is an NPT signatory with a full safeguards agreement in place since 1992.
