Its highly debatable if population is even a problem. Bad governance and shitty economic policies, yes. Population - NO. Almost all the successful countries of the world have high population/high population density - Japan, US, France, Uk, Netherlands, Spain, Belgium, Italy, Russia, China(recently) , SoKo and what not.

Picking India and other highly populated/high population density countries with poor development record to conclude that population is a problem all the while ignoring the high population ones with high development record is called Texas sharp shooter fallacy.

OTOH, countries with shitty economic policy and governance will invariably have shitty development - be it high population India or low population nigeria, kashakistan

there was an interview of late Mrs. Indira Gandhi sometime post the '71 ghazwa-e-pak. it was conducted by an amreeki journo. he asked Mrs. Gandhi something like, "even after independence and in today's modern world, don't you feel its shameful that people in your country are pulling rickshaws with their hands [indicating at rickshaw-pullers in Kolkata] (human rights, blah blah)"....her reply was brilliant, something like - "they are doing hard work to feed their families due to the poverty and lack of amenities in our country, whereas, in your country of overabundance, people go to enjoy themselves in clubs to ogle at stripping & naked women - isn't THAT shameful?! don't you find anything shameful in that?!"
