Cos Chennai is the most hated city in India and water supply has improved much.
Are you Manc from the Republik Of Mancunia?

I will take your word for it that it has improved much. Last time I went there, although it was 4 years ago, my host was still purchasing water for bathing. I personally don't hate Chennai. In fact, it is one of the few cities I really like, despite the water related hardships I have always endured.

Which city are you from?
Calcutta, Patna, Bhubaneswar, Trivandrum, Mumbai, and a city in North Carolina.

I have lived in all these places; lived, not merely visited. I don't represent any particular place.

One very important criteria in such comparisons is the presence of job opportunities. Mumbai and Delhi score very high in this regard, with jobs in a variety of sectors ranging from Finance, construction, IT and ITeS, Electronics, manufacturing and industry and so on. Chennai comes just a little lower than Mum/Del. Bangalore has humungous number of jobs in IT and ITeS, but scores low on other job categories, so one can place it just slightly lower than Chennai. Hyderabad comes next, and unfortunately Kolkatta comes last. The epithet of 'dying' or 'decaying' city has been given to it in large part because of the lack of modern white collar job opportunities in Kol.

Well said. That is exactly the problem, not only with Calcutta but with the entire state of West Bengal.

Still - aesthetics used to be written off - at least upto 10 years ago - when pretty most Indian cities reminded of Salaam Bombay. The socialist years had pretty much reduced our cities to recycle bin!!
With Liberalization - most of the cities seem to have exploded in terms of Infra development as well as aesthetics. I still stand by Calcutta receiving the poorest scores - from aesthetics, work atmosphere, infrastructure, industry - its pretty much at the bottom of the barrel. "The people are wonderful and the food is great" - no doubt true - hardly acts as a strong positive.
The expats of Kabul and even Mogadishu use those same words to prop up their demolished city - thats because there are no other good points in those cities to gloat !

Calcutta can regain its lost glory - it just needs to shed any remaining obsesssion with Communists and the marxist ideologies - 30 years of which have reduced it from one of the best cities to its Worst!!!

Sad but true in many cases.

There is a fine line between standing up to exploitation and laziness. People failed to see that. In fact, people still don't see that.

really, Calcutta that bad? :s
Not really.

Politics is really bad. So is cleanliness and lack of civic amenities. Footpath, meant for pedestrians have been taken over by union supported hawkers. If people are talking ill about Calcutta, it cannot be totally false. It is largely true.

Yet, personally, I've had far worse experience living in Mumbai.

For the 7 people who selected Mumbai and the 4 who selected Chennai, I humbly say "Go screw yourself".

Mumbai,I dont need to say anything. Its a world in itself and any difficulty it gives are offset by the even more numerous opportunities it presents. And yeah Mumbai cabbies/auto drivers are the best among any Metro cities who drive strictly as per meter and not as per their wish.

As regards Chennai , except the fleecing auto-wallahs and the horrible summer, I dont see any other problem in that city. It is relatively beautiful, traditional, less slums, reasonably good infra, more opportunities for both software and in core engg, good educational institutions, excellent medical facilities etc.

Infact its one of the best metros in India.

I'm sure most of those who voted against calcutta have never visited the city, it's just the bad press, we bongs have a habit of self-flogging!

I've lived chennai and mumbai, I didn't feel any difference in infrastructure. Mumbai does have bulk of skyscrappers, but calcutta will just be behind mumbai and ahead of chennai. As far as jobs are concerned, the pictures is neither rosy nor gloom, we are behind mumbai, blore and chennai but that's about it, all major it firms have their footmark in calcutta, infy will soon join in.

As far as I'm concerned, chennai was a nightmare for me, no offence karthik. :p

This thread should not be made into a regional issue , nor it is against any community or region , so nobody should be offended here.

Secondly i am a bengali , i voted for kolkata , i have stayed there and stayed in delhi , bangalore and mumbai and why i voted for calcutta is a total my own opinion not to offend anybody or anyhow just my experiences elsewhere were better i guess.

again i request , dont take this thread as this vs that community its not that its a light thread
