Lt. Gen.(retired) J.F.R. Jacob, one of the heroes of 1971 India-Pakistan
War that eventually led to the creation of Bangladesh out of what was then
East Pakistan, speaks to Bangladesh Today this week. He talks about how
former Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi took bold and pragmatic decisions
at that time that contributed to the victory. Lt..Gen. Jacob also speaks
about how he compelled Lt. Gen. N.A.K.Niazi, the then General Officer
Commanding-in-Chief of Pakistan's Eastern Army Command, to surrender, and
how the Mukti Bahini rose against the Pakistan Army.

A gentleman to the core, Lt.General JFR Jacob is a national hero and an ideal for many in this country. One of the most brilliant military minds this country has ever produced.

Some major points to be noted from this interview.

- He once again underlines the role played by the politicians. Bangladesh war proved that the military can win the day for this country anytime, provided that there is a strong political support.

- The credit given to Mukti Bahini was not upto the level it should have been. It was them who ultimately prepared the ground for the Indian intervention. Their efforts and sacrifices saved the potential loss of life of many Indian soldiers.

- Lt. Gen Jacob's daring bluff. Having 3000 odd men and asking the opposite side's general, who possessed an overwhelming strength of 26,400 troops, to surrender was nothing short of audacious.
