We can start reverse-engineering then, once the relation deteriorates.
I am sure this has been done already and improved upon Brahmos 2?
Israelis also got a feel for it ,if what Pack leader claims is true-when
Israel tested Barak 8 against Brahmos(check Barak-8 thread).

Yes, we should give them less contracts because of delay in AC Gorshkov and the milking tactics they used on us.We should look for more local R&D and infra.

But we should collaborate on equal terms(example Brahmos) , we threw away money at them but got defense products we could not make and security conver as well (remember the anti-India US+Pak nexus in 1971) so we cant push the best ally we ever had.Still most of of our defense tech is based on Russia. Russia should be our close ally at least if not the closest.

back to the topic... we need to wait and watch what Russia is upto regarding Pakis.
I don't think we need to be threatened I don't see this relationship developing into a military one
Russians are more concerned with US pullout from Afghanistan and making preparations.

Actually no. India has to keep Russia on its side. We need to give them enough contracts to keep them away from selling to Pak.
As far as weapon systems are concerned we now have access to better sources. Russian systems can no longer match the western ones. We must seek new alliances. But the ultimate desire must be complete self-reliance.

India is no longer an India of 70s. We will have to act according to our new global standing. Frankly speaking India must insist that South Asia is our backyard, and nobody is allowed to poke his nose in here, not even the "most trusted ally".

Calling it Indian sub continent instead of South Asia would be a good start!

Merely a visit from Putin and people are already talking about breaking relations and reverse engineering Russian products. I thought this is an Indian forum and we are supposed to be saner than our western neighbour. :tsk:

Nobody is talking about breaking relations, instead we must create new alliances, suitable and beneficial for the "new resurgent" India. Our bond with Russia is not like "Hindu Marriage" which must be considered to be sacred and must not be broken. Russia must understand that we don't need "saviors", we need reliable "partners".

To avoid Russians to sell weapons to Pakistan, we just need to help Pak getting bankrupt as soon as possible.

We are biggest buyers of their arms that too of low quality & with lots of delay. It is the need of the Russians to come on our side , if they want to earn the money by selling their weapons. We just need to be more demanding by seeking more value of our money.

India need to understand it's importance in order to be important for other & them to come on it's side.

Attitude & weight matters & it should be traded & used properly, we need not to be so shake able by just some diplomatic moves.

It was India who chose to pay back all the debts they owed to USSR to Russia, just after USSR collapsed. Since paying back your trusted allies with wasted papers was not a very appreciated action in all senses, no wonder Russia want to grab cash more than normal from India in any chance they got.

Interesting turn around, same russia who helped india in breaking pakistan in 1971 is welcomed and cheered upon by pakistan in 2012.
Same pakistan who helped US to defeat USSR in 70's and yet russia is trying to open with pakistan in 2012.

But russia cannot replace USA as far as pakistan is concerned. Russies are not in the state of giving so many freebies which usa gave.
Nor the pakistan is in the state that they can make such a hard core cash deals with russia that ruskies will think of siding india and replacing with pakistan.

Putin calls off Pak visit

Islamabad: President Vladimir Putin has called off a scheduled visit to Islamabad, leading to the postponement of a quadrilateral summit of Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan and Afghanistan planned for next month, officials said today.

Putin was expected to arrive in Pakistan on 2 October for a two-day visit that was being projected by Pakistani officials as an opportunity to reset bilateral ties, which have been strained since the days of the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan.

Officials said Putin had cancelled the visit without giving any reasons.

No fresh date for a visit was announced.......

Russian president defers Pakistan visit

ISLAMABAD: Russian President Vladimir Putin has postponed his visit to Pakistan, saying that he has other engagements scheduled on the same dates, the Pakistani foreign office said on Thursday.

However, Express News reported that he postponed his trip due to security concerns.
According to a press release issued by the Pakistani foreign office, the quadrilateral summit between Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan and Afghanistan which was scheduled for October 2 and 3 has also been postponed.
In a letter to President Asif Ali Zardari, Putin expressed his eagerness to "jointly enhance efforts to further develop Russian-Pakistani ties" and "advance mutually beneficial trade and economic projects."
The Russian president wrote, "I am confident that in future we shall be able to find opportunities for arranging our personal meeting. We shall always be happy to receive you in Russia".
The new dates for the summit will be sorted out after seeking availability of the participating leaders through diplomatic channels.

Haha! Wonderful news. There's a reason why they are our Brothers from the North. May the friendship between the people of our two great nations stand the test of time, as it has for the last many decades.

Still waiting for the bear hug

September 28, 2012

Vladimir Radyuhin

.....Russian diplomats say that Mr. Putin's visit was indeed discussed but insist it was not been cancelled simply because it was never confirmed in the first place.

"Russia agreed to take part in the quadripartite meeting, but we never said Mr. Putin will lead the Russian delegation," said Mr. Zamir Kabulov, head of the 2nd Asia Department in the Russian Foreign Ministry, which looks after South Asia and Iran......
