China extending military reach

No wonder then that so many of its neighbours are worried; particularly those like Vietnam and the Philippines who are engaged in long-running maritime disputes with Beijing.

According to Dr Andrew Erickson, a China expert at the US Naval War College: "China does not want to start a war, but rather seeks to wield its growing military might to 'win without fighting' by deterring actions that it views as detrimental to its core national interests."

It is unlikely that Taiwan would actually do something serious to mainland China, because remember that Taiwan is the right wing version of CCP (not in a bad way but in a patriot way). Their claims are even worse and preposterous than CCP if you take a look at their "claim" map!. Vietnam on the other hand is known for pummeling the CCP in far worse situation long ago with almost nothing.

Indonesia has recently started ordering Chinese weapons.. it may not be so militaristic. They're nowhere in terms of military might. PLAN alone is enough to swallow Indonesia and Malaysia together. The only two countries capable of fighting PRC in this list are Japan and Vietnam and maybe to some extent South Korea. You can add India in the list of non-capable nations too thanks to the puppet PM and his Italian owners ruling this country. UPA pisses in its pants to be aggressive to Lankans and Pakistanis, forget China. With this government it'd be a miracle if they can even say a word against CCP.

Philippines to beef up security after China's claim of ownership of the South China Sea

Manila: The Philippines and the United States are to hold joint naval exercises in the West Philippine Sea (the designated name of the South China Sea) for 10 days from the end of the month.
The countries will also discuss beefing up Philippine naval power to stave off China's sudden assertion of supremacy in the contested sea lane and oil-rich Spratly Archipelago, sources have said.
The Armed Forces of the Philippines and the US will hold joint war games off Palawan in southwest Philippines, in the West Philippine Sea, from June 28 to July 8, said Philippine Navy spokesman, Lieutenant Colonel Omar Tonsay.

The war games, identified as Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (Carat) 2011, have been ongoing for more than 10 years, after the Philippine Senate's ratification of the US-Philippines Visiting Forces Agreement in 1998, said Tonsay.
In August, top officials from the Philippines and the US will also attend an annual board meeting of the US-Philippine Mutual Defence Treaty, an agreement forged by the two allies in 1951.
Protection
Meanwhile, the government has allocated 11.9 billion pesos (Dh991 million) for the acquisition of modern Hamilton-class cutter patrol craft from the US Coast Guard; and the development of the Philippine Coast Guard to protect the eight-Kalayaan island chain claimed by the Philippines on the Spratly Archipelago, said Armed Forces of the Philippines chief of staff Gen Eduardo Oban Jr.
"We will have radars and communication equipment for detection and monitoring of the Coast Guard in the West Philippine Sea," he said, adding the equipment will arrive in August.

the recent incident in the south china sea has united china's biggest rivals into a sort of loose alliance challenging its notorious intentions in the vicinity of the sea lanes.

add to that indonesia , taiwan who also would not mind to have a pound of their bitter rivals. for he first time the chinese plans seems to have backfired and almost all of its neighbours are now up against them , china cannot afford to get this alliance get strong or risk an armed conflict in a larger scale.

Chinese diplomacy will be tested , what do you feel china should be doing
Before you start, you should check your facts first.

Japan & Korea? you must be kidding me. Korea wants Japanese blood more than anyone else! They don't like chinese, but they definitely hate Japanese!

Taiwan?
Guess who provided water to Chinese fleet during sino-vietname south china sea conflict in last 70s?
Guess who threatened to step in when vietname tried to grab taiwan occupied island in south china sea?
Guess who prepared military support for chinese fleet when china and vietname fired on each other's boat in last 80s?

Vietnam issues decree about a potential military call-up

Several Asian nations claim territory in the South China Sea, which includes important shipping routes and may contain oil and gas deposits.
On Monday, Vietnam staged live-fire drills after weeks of rising tensions between the two nations.
Vietnam has also issued a decree specifying who would be exempt from military call-up in a time of war.
"We will not resort to the use of force or the threat of force," Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Hong Lei said.
He condemned any action that would exacerbate the dispute, and urged those involved to "do more that is beneficial to regional peace and stability".
As well as Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan also have rival claims in the area.
As chair of the regional grouping Asean last year, Hanoi actively promoted a multilateral approach to the problem. However, Beijing says it prefers to negotiate with individual states separately.
Responsibility In an apparent message to China that Vietnam is willing to stand its ground, the Vietnamese government issued a decree earlier specifying which people would be exempt from military service during a time of war.
The decree lists eight examples where Vietnamese citizens would not be obliged to join a military call-up. They include people holding senior positions in state organisations and those providing essential services such as lighthouse operators.
The BBC's South East Asia correspondent Rachel Harvey says the significance lies not in the exemptions themselves but in the timing of the decree.
The news comes a day after the Vietnamese navy conducted exercises it described as routine, but which at least one Chinese newspaper interpreted as a deliberate show of force.
Vietnam is engaged in a renewed row with China over sovereignty of two groups of islands in the South China Sea; the Spratly and Paracel islands.
Tensions have escalated following two separate confrontations involving Vietnamese and Chinese boats in recent weeks.
In a thinly veiled reference to Hanoi, Mr Hong implied Vietnam was to blame for the recent row.
"Some country took unilateral actions to impair China's sovereignty and maritime rights and interests, and released groundless and irresponsible remarks with the attempt to expand and complicate the issue of the South China Seas," Mr Hong said.
"This is where the problem lies."
The US has also expressed concern about China's rising naval ambitions in the region.
On Sunday, the Japan-based carrier USS George Washington left port for deployment in the region, which is almost certain to include the South China Sea.

In fact, Taiwan just declared it was gonna conduct a military drill in South China Sea recently. Of course some may argue the target of such drill is the mainland.
