I am quite surprised by the Chart!! First of all UP is 2nd? Then Andhra and WB is above Gujarat? WB is know for poverty and because of its communist party they dont have proper industries there either, so how does that appear above Gujarat! Sadist part Punjab is even below Kerala and right above Bihar that is the biggest shock! The land of 5 rivers and the bread basket of India is below the coconut tree land and jungle raj!

One thing that did not surprise me is that South Indian states are all getting well! Chennai is like the Detroit of India and they have almost all the car factories there.

Economic disparity has always existed, but there is more disparity now than at any other time in Indian history. The gap is increasing rapidly and will only continue to increase.

It is the backward states that obviously require the most investment.
First of all dont judge by these figures, the population in the North-East is extremely low, Manipu has just 1.5million people that is lesser than Delhi. So for that GDP and population people there are in par with the rest of India if that is anything good!

The Economic disparities can only end if we the political system is seriously revamped like the US system allowing new people to come in every 8years. Our democracy fosters only family and dynastic politics, Kurananadhi is CM of TN for almost 30years now! Such things should never happen.

what you need to look at is not the holistic nominal gdp figures but per capita figures for each state which is what will tell the economic situation of each state.

In Gujarat the answer is Yes!!

Efficiency would be at its highest levels, thats why all corporates and FDI is flowing into Gujarat, and the reason is simple i.e MODI

i hope narendra modi be the prime minister of our country, he can replicate his success in gujarat in national level.the pseudo secularist congress is the biggest impediment to india's future.probably congress has looted more wealth in the last 63 years than the wealth looted by muslim invaders and british colonisers for the last 1000 years combined.if narendra modi is the chief minister we can overtake chinese gdp in 8-10 years which is presently unthinkable under congress regime.i wish my state west bengal also had a cm like him

Just add one more col to that chart ie % of population. Another for GDP per capita. Startling.

Per capita is there. What people might have noticed is that in dollar terms economy had shrunk due to the increase in dollar price. In dupes terms there were handsome gains.

in fact gujarat has a lot of hype around it since a lot of pr and money has gone in to building that image, the state which is doing a quite brisk march, about which no one ever talks is haryana.

Haryana's economy is largely agriculture based. It grows high value crops like rice and wheat. It has morec area, than Gujarat, under assured irrigation and has potential untapped. Gujarat economy is increasing industry based. In 2009, Gujarat came close to Haryana, but in 2011 it may surge ahead.

if you have a closer look at the chart (http://unidow.com/india home eng/statewise_gdp.html) there you would see an average haryanvi earns 21% more than an average gujju. in fiscal 2009 haryana's yoy growth was 18.39%, compare that to gujarat's 11.22%, and for fiscal 2010 haryana grew by 14.4% compared to gujarat at 12.72%.

Gujarat's industry break up :
agriculture, forestry and fishing – 19.05%, industry – 34.92%, services – 46.04%

Haryana's industry break up :
agriculture, forestry and fishing –22.58%, industry –16.82%, services 60.60–%

http://unidow.com/statewise_gdp/default.html

the above shows haryana is not a predominantly an agriculture state but a services state. incidently india's fastest growing sector is services and not the industries. IIP for the month of november hit a wall at 2.7%.

But when services sector will observe a saturation point the only engine that will drive India's growth will be the manufacturing and industrial sector which has a strong foothold in Gujarat and many MNCs coming.

The day Microsoft becomes bankrupt, i.e. never.
yeah IT could go on endlessly may be not but one thing we forget and that is one of the major components of services sector is not the IT but the retail sector and this sector is yet to take off in india, now it is assumed people who have more buying power will play a significant role in growth of this sector and this is where haryana has the edge.

haryana had a bad government with the chautala+bjp combine but now this state has quietly taken off and they are not creating any hype around it.
