Venezuela plans a 'guerrilla army' against US invasion - Yahoo! News Canada
Venezuela is training a "guerrilla army" aiming to be a million strong by 2013 to fight off a possible US invasion, an opposition lawmaker said Sunday.

"Plan Sucre" -- apparently crafted with input from close ally and fellow US foe Cuba -- covers the legal, logistical and other angles necessary to "transform a professional army into a guerrilla army," Representative Maria Corina Machado told El Universal newspaper.

The former presidential candidate said she had obtained a copy of the plan, printed by an institution affiliated with the national army.

"The strategic objective is to build a new Bolivarian military doctrine" that would prepare Venezuela to be successful in a prolonged popular war against "the empire," or the United States, Machado said, citing the document.

"This is clearly a proposal with Cuban inspiration and advice."

She said the military plan also provides for strengthening the guerrilla force at the expense of the regular army.

The plan calls for "strengthening the territorial militias, in order to ensure the necessary strength for the overall defense of the nation, targeting recruitment levels of one million by 2013 and two million by 2019," Machado said, citing the document.

Venezuela's militia corps, described by firebrand leftist President Hugo Chavez as "an army of the public," was created in 2005 to protect the country against possible "imperialist" aggression. They are considered a part of the military but report directly to the president.

Chavez, 58, is a vocal critic of Washington. The United States and Venezuela have had troubled relations for years, and have not had ambassadors in each other's country since 2010.

The Venezuelan president, who took power in 1999, is seeking re-election in October after declaring himself free of the cancer he has battled for a year.

He has often denounced "American imperialism" and accused the United States of seeking to destabilize his government.

Machado was one of several candidates aiming to challenge Chavez in the upcoming October vote, but she was defeated in February's primary by former Miranda state governor Henrique Capriles.

Most polls give Chavez leads of up to 35 percent to win the election.

We buy Venezuelan oil now.

U.S. Total Crude Oil and Products Imports
In October 2010, Hugo Chavez announced the intention to have Petróleos de Venezuela sell its Citgo subsidiary calling it a "bad business" and citing low profits since 2006. The minimum sale price was set at 10 billion US dollars; however, Petróleos de Venezuela has been unable to find a buyer at that price.

Unadulterated BS from Venezuela. The crude they drill is the worst possible quality. Their crude reserves are not even counted in the world reserves.

He is another Rakhi Sawant, needs to be in the news to be relevant.

LF, what happened to his plans to sell Oil at cheaper price to the poor in the US?

You may but remember the yanks also play the same "threat" card during there elections.
Yes, they do. It is an unwritten rule for every US Presidential Candidate to take a dig at the 'evil Russkies,' to earn the 'badge' of patriotism.

Russian attack submarine sailed in Gulf of Mexico undetected for weeks, U.S. officials say

A Russian nuclear-powered attack submarine armed with long-range cruise missiles operated undetected in the Gulf of Mexico for several weeks and its travel in strategic U.S. waters was only confirmed after it left the region, the Washington Free Beacon has learned.
Brazil's O Estado de Sao Paoli reported Aug. 2 that Russia plans to sell Venezuela up to 11 new submarines, including one Akula.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Moscow's military is working to set up naval replenishment facilities in Vietnam and Cuba, but denied there were plans to base naval forces in those states.

More relevant to Hugo and his neighbors, he has allowed sanctuary to FARC guerillas.

I hope US has to learn from it's mistake at least now and stop world policing so other country will go back to their own work,

But US is learning soon from their mistakes they did not include "The Art of War" under their study material for their passing out army and they got hacked by Vietnamese who had it under their study materiel before and during WAR then finally NOW they included it after finding where the Vietnamese got all the know how well it's a start just ignore the time gap :p

Hope US soon learns quick

Considering they wouldn't have a conventional Army left after a US invasion that is all they could fall back on.

Consider that if Obama wants to be re-elected, could it be he would invade Venezuela as a reaction to the current rising gasoline prices in the US? I would not bet on that.

Beware of American propaganda. Please research on the number of foreign leaders, especially from South America, who have been executed by CIA.

Venezuela does have massive reserves of, if only, heavy crude. But the cost of extraction advantage that the gulf has, is offset by the proximity of South American oil especially with advances in extraction technologies.

If ExxonMobil gets Venezuela, America can fight a war in the gulf for a decade without feeling the impact of rising oil prices. Because between Canada and Venezuela are the two largest reserves of heavy crude in the world totalling a recoverable 300 billion barrels of oil.
The rest of the world on the other hand will suffer massively because supplies from the gulf will be crippled.

There are several ways to re-balance the world economy, this is just one. Don't be simpletons. Try to think a little more critically. How is Venezuela or Chavez a threat to anyone in the world? On the other hand Venezuela is a very important cog in the US' desire to retain its pre-eminence.
