Varanasi gets Rs 18 crore for ghats, to be developed as tourist city - The Economic Times

NEW DELHI: On its first day in office, the Narendra Modi government sanctioned Rs 18 crore for the development of Varanasi's ghats and construction of jetties in the temple town. "We want to develop Varanasi as a tourist city and I will discuss this issue with the Prime Minister," the new minister of tourism and culture Shripad Yesso Naik said after assuming charge.

Naik, who has been elected an MP from Goa, said efforts will be made to concentrate on infrastructure development in tourism. He said that the tourism sector needed to work in conjunction with and have the support of other ministries such as the ministry of home affairs as well as civil aviation.

The minister also said incidents of crime against women in the past, including those against foreign tourists, had given the country a 'bad name' and needed to be addressed so that tourists feel safe while travelling in India.
Long overdue imo! I hope it is done quickly, Strange that it took us so long to realize the potential of the place.

MAssive education needed. But who throws corpses?
Some so called "educated" and non-educated folks.

All those people show "love" for "Maa Ganga" but put rotting corpses in it... double standards.

Apart from its religious significance, Varnasi is the oldest continually inhabited city in the world.

And also known as one of the most "dirty" cities in India. :dude:
