Some people say Obama has a soft spot for Pakis due to him spending part of his youth there.

Indian Embassy chides Hagel for 2011 remark | Fox News

The Embassy of India chided secretary of defense nominee Chuck Hagel late Monday for suggesting in a previously unreleased 2011 speech that India has "for many years" sponsored terrorist activities against Pakistan in Afghanistan.

"India has over the years financed problems for Pakistan" in Afghanistan, Hagel said during a 2011 address on Afghanistan at Oklahoma's Cameron University, according to video of the speech obtained by the Washington Free Beacon.

A spokesperson for the Embassy of India told the Free Beacon that Hagel's remarks are not grounded in "reality."

USA has shown its true colors now. We must stop all military engagement with them now. But yess, we are doing what has been stated and why shud we not? POK is an integral part of India. We must allow all citizens of POK to travel without passports and visa within India and also open our IITs and other institutions for recruiting the people from POK. We must also increase our engagement in Balochistan and Sindh to ensure that democracy and especially secularism survives.

It's not USA as a whole but some of the diplomats who get funded by ISI, speak their language.
Off course US does need a dog cum servant in South Asian region, and who better than shitlanders at their
service rather than dirty, smelly and short Hindus.

One person makes a statement and it reflects on "true colors" of the US? Why don't people come out of the anti US mentality. Even the oldies are getting out of it and so the nuke deal.

BTW Hagel was one of the biggest supporters of the Civil Nuke Deal with India and when Musharraf asked Hagel to get a deal for Pak, he point blank said no we cannot do that coz your record is not like India.

I gather the above after watching the Times Now debate with one of the guests from the US

The thing for India is that right now the US Secretary of State is a Paki lover and we may have Sec Def as let me out it not so favorable to India. Reminds me of Nixon and Kissinger days although I don't think the former two gentlemen are as devious as the latter two.

India financed problems for Pakistan in Afghanistan: Chuck Hagel

SOURCE: PTI

In a sharp contrast to US view on India's role in Afghanistan, President Barack Obama's Defence Secretary nominee Chuck Hagel has alleged that India has over the years "financed problems" for Pakistan in the war-torn country.

A video containing these remarks from an unreleased speech of Hagel at Oklahoma's Cameron University in 2011 was uploaded by Washington Free Beacon, sparking a strong reaction from India which said such comments are "contrary to the reality" of its unbounded dedication to the welfare of Afghans.

Hagel, during the speech said, "India for some time has always used Afghanistan as a second front, and India has over the years financed problems for Pakistan on that side of the border".

"And you can carry that into many dimensions, the point being [that] the tense, fragmented relationship between Pakistan and Afghanistan has been there for many, many years," Hagel said.

Reacting to this, the Indian Embassy here said,"Such comments attributed to Senator Hagel, who has been a long-standing friend of India and a prominent votary of close India-US relations are contrary to the reality of India's unbounded dedication to the welfare of Afghan people".

It added that India's commitment to a peaceful, stable and prosperous Afghanistan is unwavering, "and this is reflected in our significant assistance to Afghanistan in developing its economy, infrastructure and institutional capacities".

"Our opposition to terrorism and its safe havens in our neighbourhood is firm and unshakable.

"India's development assistance has been deeply appreciated by the people and the Government of Afghanistan, and by our friends around the world including the US.

"We do not view our engagement with Afghanistan as a zero sum game," the Embassy said.

Hagel's remarks are in sharp contrast to viewpoint of Obama Administration that has always been in praise of India's developmental role in Afghanistan and in fact has been pressing New Delhi to do more in Afghanistan.

Significantly, a deeply divided Senate is in the process of voting on US President's contentious nominee to head the Defence Department.

The Embassy said India and the US have a shared perspective and a deep convergence of interests for ensuring peace and stability in Afghanistan.

"We will continue to work to help the Afghan people build a peaceful, prosperous, democratic and inclusive future for themselves in an environment free from terror and intimidation," the statement said.

The unearthing of anti-India comment by Hagel provided another ammunition to the Republican Senators to oppose his confirmation which is slated to come up today.

Once published, the news item was sent by the office of powerful Republican Senator John Cornyn, who is among the leading opponent of twice wounded Vietnam veteran's confirmation.

"In light of our shared interest in the US-India relationship, thought you would want to see this," said the email sent by Cornyn's office to top Indian American community leaders. Cornyn is Co-Chair of the Senate India Caucus.

"I am surprised and shocked. We did not know the story and background of Senator Hagel on India, Afghanistan and Pakistan. I think Indian Community needs to work on to see how we can help to stop his nomination for the post of Secretary of Defence.

"We will definitely follow up with our Senators and impress on them on the folly of such a nomination," Republican Sampat Shivangi, national president of Indian American Forum for Political Education, said.

As Nebraska Senator for two terms from 1997 to 2009, Hagel was member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, frequently travelled to South Asia and voted in favour of the historic India-US civilian nuclear deal.

During his trip to Pakistan he told the then Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf that a similar agreement was not on cards with Islamabad, because of the proliferation issues with his country.

Hagel's nomination has bitterly split the Senate, with Republicans turning on their former colleague and Democrats standing by Obama's nominee.

Republican lawmakers excoriated Hagel over his past statements and votes. They argued that he was too critical of Israel and too compromising with Iran. They cast the Nebraskan as a radical far out of the mainstream.

after reading this article it seems like it might just b an elaborate plan of the senators detractors to nullify his nomination,
which might just b possible considering the speech was made in 2011.
but the comment in general seems lacking any factual basis and erroneous.

He belongs to that School of Thought in USA which shows India == Pakistan like Brookings Institution. For everything that is not correct with the Islamic republic of Pakistan, India is Responsible. For them Paki is a B*itch who is used for Anti-India Activities. For US, Paki taking over Kashmir is in very much their interest and they have supported for Decades but Paki Slaves got Spanked every time and Embarrassment for USA.

The Motivation are US Interests and Hate for India.

He does not have friends in his own Republican Party who are making all efforts to see him not getting nominated. But what I heard is that he will get confirmed.

He didn't say this in any "official" capacity. Heck this was not even known to anyone till his republican colleagues leaked it to stall his nomination.

Where is the proof?.
Exactly. Hagel bought into the propaganda peddled by Pak and made that speech. Pak says we have hundreds of consulates in Astan while the truth is that we have only four.

India has no camps training Afghans or any terrorists. The country is covered by the US and where the US is not there, te Talibunnies are. Wonder where India is training all those people. But yeah over the years Pakis have mastered the art of making suckers out of Americans so Hagel is not a surprise.

Of course there is no proof. If there was one Pakis would have seized the moment and have made hue and cry about it.

I remember Christine Fair also made similar statement and had to back track.

All these people come into the talk of Paki propaganda and say things which they don't have any idea about.
