The Primary reason for Turkey, a major US ally and a member of NATO, to purchase the FN FS-2000, the export version of the Chinese HQ-9,long range SAM, was not to defend its airspace but to steal critical information regarding the missile for the US, according to Kanawa Defense Review operated by Andrei Chang, a military analyst based in Canada.

Normally I hate to go ad hominem, but Andrei Chang (formerly known as Andrei Pinkov) is a less-than-credible source when it comes to Chinese defense deals. He's pretty much a PR hack for Rosoboronexport. It's not surprising that he'd make something up to try and sow discord between China, the US, and Turkey when Russia was excluded from the Turkey SAM deal.
