Also In Egypt(as with Tunisia)There was sense of uncertainty as to the outcome, strength and the real objectives of the protests, which ensured to an extent the Mubarak's' regimes extreme caution with employing excessive force,Mubarak hoped to weather the protests and thus wanted to limit any potential damage to his political credibility.Gaddafi knows how the protests will end for him,if he doesn't overwhelm it or prevent it from gaining momentum, hence the unprecedented and brutal use of violence. For Gaddafi its all or nothing.

Apparently there is no country for old dictators these days,Saudi used to the favorite haunt of out of power dictators, but considering the Saudis themselves might be nervously counting their chances of surviving the rage on the Arab streets, will not want to invite unsolicited trouble.Gaddafi might be reluctant to move into any western country for the fear of being extradited back to Libya,if a popular govt came to power and requested for his extradition. No safe haven yet so to speak, perhaps that explains the intensity of the crackdown,Gaddafi isn't expecting a safe undisturbed post ouster retirement days with all his ill gotten wealth.

As these pics clearly shows the rocket pods on the Mirages are filled with rockets. Shudder to think what would have happened if those rockets were fired on protesters. All the more reasons why these protests should continue & regimes which unleashes air power against its own people in such a demonic manner should be removed so that a new democratic set up can be established where basic civil rights like anti establishment protests can be carried out by people without the fear of airplanes raining bombs on them.

Just saw news on TV! Many Indians are also dead there. :mad2: WTF is GOI doing? How can it sit and watch? If not warn Gaddafi, at least they could send a FARE-FREE Government sponsored special flight to Libya and evacuate our people there. The new report (from South Indian SUNTV Channel) says many of them were south Indian expats! What madness is this? Lankans are attacking them and now GOI has extended any support to people there... our people stuck in Egypt were asked exorbitant prices..What is UPA upto?

@ Vijay,

the latest updates aren't so encouraging as news with photos is coming up and that's quite a problem. Worst of all, our people were given no bloody protection. What the EFF had our people done to that sh*tface called Gaddafi huh? The insane pervert should suffer for this. If we didn't have such a vile and pathetic government, they would have warned Gaddafi already and sent this warning openly.

The least these Losers in Delhi can do is to send free special AI planes and help get the surviving Indians and the bodies of those who tragically were killed in Gaddafi's bomb runs.

BTW Hope your dad is safe, man. That country is a madhouse now.

Libya unrest: Defiant Gaddafi vows to die as martyr, fight revolt

TRIPOLI: A defiant Muammar Gaddafi vowed on Tuesday to remain in Libya as head of its revolution, saying he would die as a martyr in the land of his ancestors and fight to the "last drop" of his blood.

Saying the people were behind him, Gaddafi ordered the army and police to crush the popular uprising against his iron-fisted four-decade rule that has already left hundreds dead in the past eight days.

In a live, apparently unscripted speech on national television, the 68-year-old Gaddafi said, "Muammar Gaddafi is the leader of a revolution; Muammar Gaddafi has no official position in order for him to resign. He is the leader of the revolution forever."

"This is my country, my country," he shouted, in a speech consisting of short, angry bursts of words, which he punctuated by shaking his fist or pointing his finger.

He said he would "die a martyr in the land of my ancestors" and "I will fight to the last drop of my blood."

"The Libyan people are with me," he said, calling on them to demonstrate from Wednesday. "Capture the rats," he said of anti-regime demonstrators. "Go out of your homes and storm them" wherever they are.

Earlier, witnesses streaming across the Libyan border into Egypt said Gaddafi was using tanks, warplanes and mercenaries in an effort to stamp out the growing rebellion.

In the eastern city of Tobruk, a Reuters correspondent there said sporadic blasts could be heard, the latest sign that Gaddafi's grip on the oil and gas exporting nation was weakening.

"All the eastern regions are out of Gaddafi's control now ... The people and the army are hand-in-hand here," said the now former army major Hany Saad Marjaa.

The White House offered its condolences for the "appalling violence" in Libya and said the international community had to speak with one voice on the crisis.

The UN refugee agency meanwhile urged Libya's neighbours to grant refuge to those fleeing the unrest, which was triggered by decades of repression and popular revolts that toppled leaders in Tunisia and Egypt.

On the Libyan side of the border with Egypt, anti-Gaddafi rebels armed with clubs and Kalashnikov rifles welcomed visitors. One man held an upside-down picture of Gaddafi defaced with the words "the butcher tyrant, murderer of Libyans", a Reuters correspondent who crossed into Libya reported.

Hundreds of Egyptians flowed in the opposite direction on tractors and trucks, taking with them harrowing tales of state violence and banditry.

In the eastern town of Al Bayda, resident Marai Al Mahry told Reuters by telephone that 26 people including his brother Ahmed had been shot dead overnight by Gaddafi loyalists.

"They shoot you just for walking on the street," he said, sobbing uncontrollably as he appealed for help.

Protesters were attacked with tanks and warplanes, he said. "The only thing we can do now is not give up, no surrender, no going back. We will die anyways, whether we like it or not. It is clear that they don't care whether we live or not. This is genocide," said Mahry, 42.

Human Rights Watch said 62 people had died in clashes in Tripoli in the past two days, on top of its previous toll of 233 dead. Opposition groups put the figure far much higher. U.N. rights chief Navi Pillay said the killing could amount to crimes against humanity and demanded an international probe.

The revolt in Libya, the third largest oil producer in Africa, has driven oil prices to a 2 1/2 year high above $108 a barrel, and OPEC said it would produce more crude if supplies from member Libya were disrupted.

With no end in sight to the crisis, refugees fled to Egypt. "Five people died on the street where I live," Mohamed Jalaly, 40, told Reuters at Salum on his way to Cairo from Benghazi. "You leave Benghazi and then you have ... nothing but gangs and youths with weapons," he added. "The way from Benghazi is extremely dangerous," he said.

Libyan guards have withdrawn from their side of the border and Egypt's new military rulers -- who took power following the overthrow of President Hosni Mubarak on Feb.11 -- said the main crossing would be kept open round-the-clock to allow the sick and wounded to enter.

Groups of rebels with assault rifles and shotguns, waved cheerily at the passing cars on a stretch of desert road, flicking the V-for-victory sign and posing with their guns, a Reuters correspondent reported.

Libyan security forces have cracked down fiercely on demonstrators across the country, with fighting spreading to Tripoli after erupting in Libya's oil-producing east last week, in a reaction to decades of

As the fighting has intensified some supporters have abandoned Gaddafi. Tripoli's envoy to India, Ali al-Essawi, resigned and told Reuters that African mercenaries had been recruited to help put down protests.

"The fall of Gaddafi is the imperative of the people in streets," he said. The justice minister also quit and a group of army officers urged soldiers to "join the people". Two pilots flew their warplanes to nearby Malta.

Defiance and condemnation

Gaddafi's son Saif on Sunday vowed his father would keep fighting "until the last man standing" and the Libyan leader appeared on television after days of seclusion to dismiss reports he had fled to the Venezuela of his ally Hugo Chavez.

"I want to show that I'm in Tripoli and not in Venezuela. Do not believe the channels belonging to stray dogs," said Gaddafi, who has ruled Libya with a mixture of populism and tight control since taking power in a military coup in 1969.

World powers have condemned the use of force against protesters, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon accusing Libya of firing on civilians from warplanes and helicopters. The Security Council met in closed session to discuss Libya.

Washington and Europe have demanded an end to the violence and Germany's foreign minister Guido Westerwelle said: "A ruling family, threatening its people with civil war, has reached the end of the line."

Demonstrations spread to Tripoli from the second city Benghazi, cradle of the revolt that has engulfed a number of towns and which residents say is now in the hands of protestors.

Residents said anxious shoppers were queuing outside stores to try to stock up on food and drink. Some shops were closed.

Spain's Repsol suspended all operations in Libya and sources said operations at cargo ports at Benghazi, Tripoli and Misurata had shut due to the violence.

Trade sources said Libyan oil port operations had also been disrupted and others said gas supplies from Libya to Italy had slowed since Late Monday, though Italy said they had not yet been interrupted..

Shell said it was pulling out its expatriate staff from Libya temporarily and a number of states were seeking to evacuate their nationals.

What a regime Gaddafi leads ! I think his is the most violent regime which ruled the country with an iron grip only after Saddam Hussein in Iraq while he was at the helm, in the entire Middle East. This is an open display of state orchestrated genocide, using tanks and fighter jets to massacre your own people. Downright deplorable.

Defiant Gaddafi refuses to quit amid Libya protests

Libyan leader Col Muammar Gaddafi has refused to stand down amid widespread anti-government protests which he said had tarnished the image of the country.

In his first major speech since unrest began last week, Col Gaddafi said the whole world looked up to Libya and that protests were "serving the devil".

Reading from the country's constitution, he said enemies of Libya would be executed.

Rights groups say nearly 300 have been killed in the violence so far.

A defiant and angry Col Gaddafi said that he had brought glory to Libya. As he had no official position from which to resign, he would remain the head of the revolution, he said.

He blamed the unrest on "cowards and traitors" who were seeking to portray Libya as a place of chaos and to "humiliate" Libyans. At other points he referred to the protesters as cockroaches or rats and mercenaries.

State TV had said Col Gaddafi was going to announce "major reforms" in his speech, but the only such reference was to some devolution of power to local authorities.

Civil war threat
The protesters had been given drink and drugs, he said, frequently shouting and banging his fist on the table as the address continued.

Even by his own bizarre and eccentric standards, the latest speech by Col Gaddafi was breathtaking in its defiance of both the wider world and the reality now facing him.

Speaking from his favourite location, Tripoli's bombed-out Bab Al-Azizia Barracks, he referred to the protesters variously as "cockroaches" and "traitors" who were "drug-fuelled, drunken and duped".

At times, the Libyan leader seemed to lose control of his temper, shouting his words in Arabic. At others, he paused to adjust his matching khaki shawl and cap. His language, while undoubtedly aimed at shoring up what support he still has in the country, was one of quaint nationalist slogans from the 1960s and 70s.

To many of those opposing his rule, who use Twitter, Facebook and the internet, this was a speech from a bygone era from a man whose time they believe has long passed.

They represented less than 1% of Libya's population he said, urging people to arrest them and hand them over to the security forces.

He called on "those who love Muammar Gaddafi" to come on to the streets in support of him, telling them not to be afraid of the "gangs".

"Come out of your homes, attack them in their dens. Withdraw your children from the streets. They are drugging your children, they are making your children drunk and sending them to hell," he said.

He urged young people to form committees "for the defence of the revolution and the defence of Gaddafi". He said they would "cleanse Libya house by house".

"If matters require, we will use force, according to international law and the Libyan constitution," he said, and warned that the country could descend into civil war or be occupied by the US if protests continued.

Anyone who played games with the country's unity would be executed, he said, referring to the Chinese authorities' crushing of the student protests in Tiananmen Square among other historical events.

He also railed against western countries, in particular the United States and Britain, which he accused of trying to destabilise Libya.

Ship to reach Libya by Saturday to evacuate Indians

With the situation in Libya remaining volatile, the government on Tuesday said it was putting in place plans for a possible evacuation of Indians from the country. There are around 18,000 Indians in that country.

The government is awaiting clearance for landing of its aircraft and for ships to evacuate its nationals. "Just spoke to our Ambassador M Manimekalai in Tripoli. She awaits clearance for landing of our aircraft and for our ships" Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao said in a tweet.

Union Minister for Shipping GK Vasan ordered the diversion of ship coming from Athens to Tripoli to bring back stranded Indians. This ship is expected to reach Tripoli on Saturday morning. It will evacuate at least 1,000 Indians and will then head to India. The ship is expected to touch Mumbai by early march, say sources.

Vasan, who was aware of the ship sailing near Athens, informed the External Affair Ministry about the same, which asked the Intelligence Bureau and Research and Analysis Wing to press into action and locate the ship. One the ship was locate its captain was told to rush to Tripoli to rescue Indians.

"Our ambassador is in touch with our nurses in Benghazi. Regular civilian flights still operating in to and out of Tripoli, I understand," Rao said.

The Indian ambassador "is also in touch with our Indian community in smaller Libyan cities. She and our Mission are doing their very best," the foreign secretary said.

Making a suo motu statement in the Lok Sabha, External Affairs Minister S M Krishna said the government was closely monitoring the situation in Libya, Yemen and Bahrain and inter-ministerial meetings have been held to take stock of the situation in the region.

"I have personally been in touch with our ambassadors in these countries and have conveyed that all measures should be taken for the safety and welfare of our nationals there," he said. He informed the House that the external affairs ministry and Indian embassies concerned have set up round-the-clock helplines for Indians.

With regard to Libya, where the situation continues to be volatile, Krishna said, "We are putting in place plans for a possible evacuation by land, air and sea." He noted that violent political protests are being witnessed in Libya as also Yemen and Bahrain, which have a significant Indian community, most of whom have gone there to earn their livelihood and have been contributing to the growth and development of the host country.

"Our embassies have been in close and regular contact with the Indian community," the minister said.

There are about 350,000 Indians in Bahrain and 14,000 in Yemen.Referring to Egypt, which also witnessed political upheaval recently, Krishna said upon request from the Indian community, three special flights were arranged by Air India, which carried around 670 Indians from Cairo to Mumbai.

"This was not evacuation and the government only facilitated the arrangement of special flights of Air India to Cairo which brought back Indians desirous of returning to India," he underlined.

TN worker shot dead by Libyan Army: Vaiko

Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam leader Vaiko on Wednesday alleged that the Libyan army had shot dead an Indian worker there and the authorities of the violence-torn country falsely claimed it to be a death in a road accident.
In letters to External Affairs Minister S M Krishna and Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi, Vaiko said 42-year-old Murugiah from Tirunelveli district was shot dead by the Libyan Army after it ordered the workers to vacate their place of accommodation.

"On February 22, they were forced by the army to vacate the place and the army opened fire at the Indian labourers, killing Murugiah and injuring Ashok Kumar," he claimed, adding that this information had been shared by the workers with their relatives back home.

The external affairs ministry had on Tuesday said a group comprising three Indians and two Egyptians were trying to cross over to Egypt by car from Tobruk, a city in north-eastern Libya, on February 19 when their vehicle was involved in a head on collision. The three Indians suffered serious injuries and Murugaiah died later at a hospital.

Vaiko said the semi-skilled workers, employed with the Hyundai Group in Libya, had informed their relatives about this incident, but the Libyan authorities had not revealed it and stated Murugiah was killed in accident.

"It is regrettable that the external affairs ministry has also accepted the Libyan authorities' version... The Centre must take all steps to immediately bring Murugiah's body to Tamil Nadu and ensure adequate compensation from Hyundai," he said.

Vaiko urged that the Centre should ensure the safety of the remaining Indian workers in Libya.

Murugiah's wife Vellathai, in a petition to the Tiruneveli district collector, claimed that her husband, among a group of 24 workers from Tamil Nadu and on contract with Hyundai, was killed in gunfire during violence.

Gaddafi would prefer to die like Hitler: Ex-minister

STOCKHOLM: One of Muammar Gaddafi's former ministers has predicted that the Libyan leader will follow in Adolf Hitler's footsteps by committing suicide, rather than give up power.

Mustapha Abdeljalil, justice minister until he quit over the bloody crackdown on protestors, told Sweden's Expressen that he expected Gaddafi to make good on his pledge to die on Libyan soil rather than slink into exile.

"Gaddafi's time is up. He is going to go like Hitler, he is going to commit suicide," Abdeljalil said in the newspaper.

Hitler committed suicide in his bunker in Berlin in April 1945 as he witnessed the disintegration of the Nazi Germany.

The former minister endorsed claims that Gaddafi had hired mercenaries from other parts of Africa who witnesses have said are at the forefront of the crackdown designed to shore up his rule
