UK: Cameron proposes cuts in benefits

Under new welfare reforms to be announced by David Cameron, housing benefit for under-25s is expected to be scrapped to encourage youngsters to get a job or move back in with their parents.

The Prime Minister will use a speech in south-east England to outline future radical changes which are aimed at saving an extra £10 billion by 2016 on top of existing plans.

In an interview with The Mail on Sunday, Mr Cameron said: "We are sending out strange signals on working, housing and families.
"A couple will say, "we are engaged, we are both living with out parents, we are trying to save before we get married and have children and be good parents. But how dies it make us feel, Mr Cameron, when we see someone who goes ahead, has a child, gets the council home, gets the help that isn't available to us?

"One is trapped in a welfare system that discourages them from working, the other is doing the right thing and getting no help."

Ministers expect this "next wave" of benefit cuts to include the axing of all housing benefit currently paid to around 380,000 people aged under 25. Such a move would force many to move back in with their parents rather than living independently.

In an interview with The Telegraph, the Work and Pensions Secretary says that he is determined to introduce radical reforms to disability benefits which will see more than two million claimants reassessed in the next four years.

Iain Duncan Smith says that the number of claimants has risen by 30 percent in recent years "rising well ahead of any other gauge you might make about illness, sickness, disability". Losing a limb should not automatically entitle people to a pay-out, he suggests.

Gaye Williams, 38, pretended she was a single mum and claimed council housing and tax benefits as well as income support, Gloucester crown court heard.

But in fact her engineer husband Glyn was still with her and the couple were maintaining a common household, said prosecutor Mark Worsley.

He said Mrs Williams ran two cars, one of them a 4x4 and the couple bought two expensive Dogue do Bordeaux dogs - which cost about £1,000 each - and sent their son to a private school while she was claiming benefits.

Friends and neighbours of the couple could clearly see they were 'not stinting' in their lifestyle, added Mr Worsley.

Mrs Williams, of Oakle Street, Churcham, Glos, admitted three offences of obtaining benefits by dishonestly failing to disclose that her husband was living with her.

Looks like now the Brits will be forced to get up and go find a job. Good and courageous move by Cameron.

But being on JSA is so fun! You have all the time in the world to do what you want and not worry about showing up for work. It is the British way!

Not that courageous a move by Cameron. The changes are not proposed until after the next general election, probably in two years time.

Amand. By the way, how are the final salary pension schemes doing? Still retiring at the age of 50?

What is it like in France?
It's like the unemployment system in the US. Up to 2 years, 40-50% of wage up to a limit, can be denied for cause, or failure to look for work. Payments are bigger since min wage is twice as high.
