The head of US tiremaker Titan has mocked French workers for putting in only "three hours" a day and said his company would be "stupid" to take over a troubled French factory.

The letter from Titan CEO Maurice Taylor to French Industrial Renewal Minister Arnaud Montebourg was in response to a request for Titan to consider investing in a loss-making Goodyear plant in Amiens, northern France.

"I have visited that factory a couple of times. The French workforce gets paid high wages but only works three hours," Taylor said in the letter, dated February 8 and obtained by French business daily Les Echos.

They get one hour for breaks and lunch, talk for three and work for three. I told this to the French union workers to their faces. They told me that's the French way!"

Goodyear said last month it was set to close the plant, which employs 1,173 workers, following five years of failed talks with unions.

Taylor said Titan had a long history of buying and turning around troubled factories but in this case was not in any way interested.

"Sir, your letter states that you want Titan to start a discussion. How stupid do you think we are? Titan is the one with the money and the talent to produce tires. What does the crazy union have? It has the French government," Taylor wrote.

He said France's industrial base was under threat from low productivity and cheap imports, including tyres from China that he said were made in subsidised factories.

"Titan is going to buy a Chinese tire company or an Indian one, pay less than one euro per hour wage and ship all the tires France needs. You can keep the so-called workers. Titan has no interest in the Amien North factory," he wrote.

France's Socialist government is struggling to boost the productivity of its industries in the face of increasing global competition. French firms have announced thousands of job cuts in recent months as the economy stagnates.

All of it is true! I have seen it too. A typical day in France :
1) As soon the employees come to office they go on a kissing spree and greet everyone "good morning" and this takes like an hour.
2) Next they check their emails for half an hour.
3) After getting tired of checking emails they take a coffee/tea break which will go on for an hour.
4) Then come back and work for 45 mins...phew! 45 mins!
5) Then two hours lunch break.
6) They many come back from lunch drunk! Many drink wine for lunch too...
7) Work for an hour after lunch and then a coffee/tea break for an hour to get over the hangover.
8)Then come back and send some emails for half a hour and that's it that will the EOB!

It's as if "A Wrong Man In The Worker's Paradise " story had really happened in France in the past...

Like! Actually France's workplace gives me all that I desire: being able to kiss any girl at work freely anytime; being able to freely monitor my emails and maybe post comments on DFI; then drink red wine for lunch. :thumb:

Then you sir are sadly mistaken!

If it is so, this nation would have stopped functioning completely, since in a good no. of posts the working strength of employees are less then 30% of the sanctioned strength and those depts. still function, albeit slow, but function they do!

Have you ever bothered to check how many of the govt. employees works late (and mind that too w/o Overtime Pay, as OT is strict no no for cost cutting) and how many have to work weekends too, only 'coz govt. as cost cutting measure won't recruit sufficient no. of staff?

There are in deed some depts. which do follow the sloth of olden days, but let me assure you that the scarce no. of employees in lower echelon has made it almost impossible for staff to be sloth if deadlines are to be met.
