U.S. can’t interfere in our strategic decisions

The spectre of looming US sanctions on Russia must have been high on the agenda of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Vladimir Putin’s discussions during their informal summit in Sochi on May 21. The Countering America’s Adversaries through Sanctions Act signed on 2 August 2017 by the US Congress, basically aims to counter Iran, Russia and North Korea through punitive measures.

Title II of the Act mostly deals with sanctions on Russian defence and security sectors, its oil and gas industry and financial institutions. And though there are provisions for exceptions, nations, entities or individuals dealing with the banned institutions would also face sanctions. While the US is yet to formally apply these on Russia, they are likely to imposed sooner rather than later.

India, which depends heavily on Russian military equipment and spares, has made it clear that it won’t allow any third party to interfere in its security requirements. India’s aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya, its sole nuclear submarine INS Chakra, the Kilo-class conventional submarines, the supersonic Brahmos cruise missile, etc., are all sourced from, and serviced by Russia, which also allows India to licence and build some of these high-end platforms.

But at the same time, unwilling to jeopardise the rapidly growing strategic relationship with Washington, New Delhi has already sought exemptions on the ground that Russian weapons and spares are a critical part of India’s security needs, and that none of them would ever constitute a threat to the US. But if the US still tries to enforce the sanctions, New Delhi is unlikely to stay quiet.

Apart from the fact that such an act would impinge on India’s sovereign right to procure weapons from whoever it wants, its dependence on Russian weapons means its security would be severely compromised at a time of great global insecurity. So if push comes to shove, New Delhi should politely point out that India too can sanction US companies doing business in India citing security threats. After all, two can play that game.

Unless the muricans have something to offer which can equal the likes of flankers and S400s in potency we should continue to source military hardware from Russia. The murican outdted and inferior f16s and f18 will be swatted by the flankers like flies and are guarantee of disaster in a war when commie gooks are armed with enough variants of russian aircraft.

India says it only follows U.N. sanctions, not U.S. sanctions on Iran

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - India said on Monday it abided by sanctions imposed by the United Nations but not those imposed by any other country, such as those announced by the United States against Iran.

U.S. President Donald Trump this month withdrew the United States from the Iran nuclear deal and ordered the reimposition of U.S. sanctions suspended under the 2015 accord.

Indian foreign minister Sushma Swaraj said New Delhi’s position was independent of any other country. “India follows only U.N. sanctions, and not unilateral sanctions by any country,” she said at a news conference.

India and Iran have long-standing political and economic ties, with Iran one of India’s top oil suppliers.

Swaraj on Monday met Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif, in New Delhi to build support against the U.S. rejection of the nuclear accord.

“Zarif briefed about the discussions that Iran has undertaken with parties to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action following the U.S. decision to withdraw from the Agreement,” said an Indian government statement, without elaborating.

India continued trade with Iran during previous sanctions but had to cut oil imports as the sanctions choked off banking channels and insurance cover for tankers.

It heartening to know that our foreign policy has grown some balls, never mind what Pappu and the opposition brigade keeps hollering.

Now we need to get that S-400 system pronto, in spite of US sanctions on Russia.

Nice aerobatics and a visual treat for the eyes! But this is a lame duck useless manoeuvre in modern air warfare where dog fights are passé. It's now the age of the BVR engagements with missiles having ranges up to 300 km. Thus the Pugachev's cobra manoeuvre is of no use to man or beast!! It cannot outsmart incoming missiles with this manoeuvre!

Americans too were thinking on the same lines as you are and entered the vietnam war only to get their air forces blown out of the sky.

Oh wow! The USAF and USN were blown out of the skies! Amazing.

OH wait, they weren't blown out of the sky. They did loose a total of 2789 aircraft in the entirety of the war. Which is a huge number on its own. BUT, that's a mere 0.4 loss per 1000 sorties.

Which speaks of the sheer weight of airpower deployed by the US. They overwhelmed all opposition in the air.

This CAATSA will not affect us. There are far too many vested interests who'll get pissed should that happen. They will make noise, release Human Rights Commission reports detailing how minorities are being persecuted etc etc... but in the end we will get S400s and Apaches and Chinooks and EMALS and P8Is and M777s and so on and so forth.

This is basically, Muricans playing to the gallery. Don't read too much into this.

Otherwise, foreign nations will draw alarmingly conclusions based on what Pappu says. After all, he's the head of the opposition in our republic.

I thought USA was using Russian engines for its NASA ... I thought USA has overlooked sanctions of neighbours of ours over far far much more critical contingencies that’s eventually threatened the prestige and survival of their own allies (from NATO, Israel, Japan etc etc). What’s good today not good tomorrow but what if that was known to be not good tomorrow and what if that was meant to be. But who needs to talk about self-interest and who wants to explain to USA that what today in their opinion is not good now might be good for them in future (And meant to be). Sometimes we do appreciate a heads up like (irrespective of timing) before the 26/11 attacks (perhaps a sense of reality). We also appreciate verification and collaboration acknowledgment of what we are saying (irrespective of timing). We don’t want to sit down a thousand times also like trade representatives do with areas around and pretend to talk high level. Talking high level is different and done differently. What I do not like is the message we are sending that we are fighting over who we want to rely on. Which is far from truth. We ought to make the message clear we will deal with and for our own interest to develop our self and our own industry like NASA uses Russia engines. I am sure the deal with Russia is with such in mind. A far more advanced GSLV type deal perhaps ... I also believe Russia is being told this on our terms that we are developing and have many of the things already developed and being developed what’s new ? What’s special ? Why ? But exactly buying hardware is not a simple buy and sell relationship it is a reliance and trust and acknowledgment of (strategic) connections. Now here is another message we are being “chased” for a better word for exclusivity - a exclusive marriage. We are already married and the wife and husband lives in India.

A small note of Russia Origin people and Americans they are in places and countries recruit such incredible people in their top echelons. Someone right now whispered in my ear (Indian people anywhere?) ... the answer is clear and present we will get the deals in our interest to develop our selves and if you don’t want to deal with India and Indians make it a fact. Say it with authority and pride. Because we are not currently on a table like UNSC is this why ... we will not beg !! Right now there are many more things that align together in the parties interests and relations compared to otherwise.

Pugachev maneuver is just waste. Nevertheless, what it coveys is the great maneuverability of Su30. The BVR range does not exceed 150km as no radar has that much of a range. Also, the lock on distance is even lower as that will require very precise radar reading. Also, the radars are upgradable even in Su30. Russia allows India to install its own radars and systems. Once UTTAM is ready, it can be scaled up for Su30 for a bigger and better AESA radar powered by high powered twin engine

Furthermore, the majority of these 2789 aircraft were helicopters undertook the missions such as dropping soldiers, weapons or picking up casualties, which can't be performed beyond visual range.

There is another school of thought: when countries get more and more stealth jet, dogfight will once again become important part of air war since both sides will have difficulty to detect and lock each other from remote distance.

That is the situation for now. In the new network theory, the AEWC will guide the missile to attack the enemy plane 300km away. That is why lots of countries are working on 300-400km air-air missile.

AEWACS will be taken down first with AEWACS killer missiles like K100. The problem with AEWACS is that they are very bulky planes and can easily be shot down

The USAF didn't have BVR missiles then! The Air-Air missile technology was at infancy during Vietnam war.

What the USAF had in Vietnam were the AIM-4, AIM-7, and AIM-9 Air to Air missiles. You can't compare them with modern BVR missiles like the R-77, AAM-4B, Astra, Derby,K-100 etc.

I'm a big big fan of Indian foreign policy. Except for the 1962 miscalculation, we have done absolutely fantastic, be it managing the cold war, or balancing the Iran-Israel relationship. I'm confident that we will get a good deal in the end. That is why the US keeps saying that Indians are slippery people, because we manage to outfox them in negotiations.

We can't isolate ourselves from the US, nor can they. We get remittances from there, and they can't isolate us because they get revenues from selling to the large middle class market here. No one has the power to walk away from a strategic deal. A deal will happen, whatever be the modalities and terminologies used. The US will keep trying to label it as an alliance, in order to get India to 'do more' and India will keep trying to relegate it to the status of 'a deal'.

Considering that the US has a 10X larger economy, the fact that Modi could make power moves by having informal meetings with China and Russia shows that being a Baniya isn't always a bad thing.

Even old American f16s will give run for money to newest flankers. Dont fool by Russian propaganda. Whenever russian and western jets came face to face , Russian jets lost in encounter

Can you explain hosting Tibet govt in exile and unnecessarily riling China? How is it good foreign policy? Would you be happy if China kept Kashmir govt in exile? Why should India behave like this with an important and big neighbour who is also known for friendly behaviour in history? The conflict of 1962 was also because of this. China does not want Arunachal or Ladakh but just wants India to not support Tibet separatists.

Don't speak nonsense everytime. Su35 is the best 4.5 generation plane and Su30 MKI is the next best one. Su30 is rivaled only by the likes of Rafale and that too due to stealth characters. F16, F18, F15 are 40 year old models with hardly any stealth designs. Su30 with its TVC and supermaneuverability is far ahead of all USA planes except for 5th generation ones.
