* New naval bases to come up on the Eastern sea board at Paradip and Tuticorin
* These will be the first major naval bases other that Vizag on the eastern coast

New Delhi, October 27
In an apparent bid to counter China's growing presence in the Bay of Bengal, especially its new forays in Bangladesh and Myanmar, the Indian Government has okayed two new naval bases on the Eastern sea board - Paradip and Tuticorin in Orissa and Tamil Nadu, respectively.

These will be the first major naval bases other that Vizag on the eastern coast. The Navy has smaller stations but no big bases that typically provide all logistics support like supplies, replenishment, repair and maintenance.

Paradip has a commercial port. Though the east coast as a host of Coast Guard stations, the decision was taken to ramp up Naval presence, sources said.

China has announced its intention to build a deep sea port at Sonadia near Cox Bazar Bangladesh. It is also building ports in Myanmar. All these are in the Bay of Bengal and face India.

Most of country's missile tests are conducted off the east coast. India's "look east" policy aims at engaging smaller navies that are east of India. For them this will be a huge morale booster as all of them regularly conduct exercises with India, said sources.

Defence Minister AK Antony today told top Naval Commanders that "due priority" will be given to creation of new operational and administrative infrastructure in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep & Minicoy Islands.

Antony, while addressing the top brass of the Navy at the bi-annual commanders conference, asked the Navy to further strengthen professional ties, mutual trust and streamline capacity to inter-operate with the navies of countries of the Indian Ocean.

China's main oil supply routes pass through these waters and it is very fidgety about India's control over the Indian Ocean.

Antony called for ""¦a state of perpetual operational readiness".

The Defence Minister said Navy's responsibilities in the Indian Ocean Region are crucial as well as sensitive from the point of view of economic prosperity and security of the nation.

Antony told the Navy commanders ""¦engage like-minded African states in the western Indian Ocean Region, such as Mozambique, South Africa, Tanzania and Kenya, to enhance strengths and stability".

He made specific reference to Sri Lanka saying there was a need to sustain the momentum of cooperation with Sri Lanka to ensure peaceful fishing on either side of the International Maritime Boundary Line and to prevent a possible resurgence of the LTTE.

Earlier, Naval Chief Admiral Nirmal Verma commended the Naval commands for integrating coastal population into the coastal security architecture through widespread campaigns — 33 in this year alone.

Shouldn't we focus on tracking and filling up uninhabited islands first? They're perfect hideouts for LET and other terrorist organizations. And it is not like Pakistan is only on West with Jamaati losers in Bangladesh creating menace for us. Mainland is covered well enough and I think IN should focus on getting the islands habited or weaponized. Maldives was in a soup because of this very reason. Only difference is that Maldives being a small country couldn't fight back and needed us to do the job.

Naval base to come up at Thoothukudi

NEW DELHI: Thoothukudi and Paradip would be developed into forward operating bases by the Navy as it seeks to strengthen its position on the eastern coast.

The move is aimed at reducing the turn-around time of the eastern fleet that depended only on Visakhapatnam and Chennai for replenishments.

The west coast is already packed with the navy having forward operating bases at Porbandar and Mangalore apart from major hubs at Mumbai, Kochi and Karwar.

The government has finally given nod to navy's proposal and these bases would now be developed in the next two to three years.

The issue of their development plan was discussed at the naval commanders' conference that got underway in New Delhi.

It would not be a difficult task as Paradip and Thoothukudi are already major ports and would be able to meet navy's logistical demands, said officials.

Along with developing new bases, the navy will also seek to engage the Indian Ocean countries in a far more aggressive manner in a move to counter China's growing footprints in the region.

Defence Minister A K Antony told naval commanders to concentrate on this area and extend every possible help to smaller nations.

The effort has already begun with New Delhi gifting basic patrol aircraft to Seychelles.

Antony said India is committed to deploying ships and aircraft for surveillance of seas near Maldives and Seychelles.

Navy has been asked to concentrate particularly on friendly African countries in the western Indian Ocean region particularly Mozambique, South Africa, Tanzania and Kenya. Under the same plan, navy had organised a three-nation exercise earlier this year involving Brazil and South African off the African coast.

Good News, controlling oceans in the future will decide who is at top, not wars of the kind in Iraq and Afghanistan. Land based resources are soon going to get exhausted and the "Final Frontier" is the sea. Blue Water navy is a must!

You know what people from my town used to go to a temple in kathchatheevu which is nearer to our city.... around 2hrs journey if we go in a small boat.. And to Indian people are allowed only one day in a year during a festival and even too that people from India should leave the island before 4:30 PM..

Srilankan Navy have a temporary camp there.. They used to shoot the fisherman whoever goes by that side (kathchatheevu) for fishing.. :angry_1:

Unfortunately, fishermen has to go to international waters to get a better yield for a day!! We used to have atleast 2 people dead in a month..

None of the Government both State (Karunanidhi allianced with Congress) and GOI never looked into this issue... This is the case since kathchatheevu has been given to SL..

And more SAD part is still people vote for those who at the centre... :emot203:

This is only one part... Things which are happening are more....

They used to size the fishing boats and imprisoning the people,. They'll release after a little effort from the local politicians and they'll brand it big. And this too happens after 2 yrs of imprisonment.. By the time, when they get released their family would have nearly battered... :angry_7:

I wish LTTE to be there for fighting people's basic rights.. It is congress who initially supported them and then later it is the same party who sent Indian forces for confront them... None of the party who ruled India till time never looked into People's interest and rarely cared about them..

At one side of my heart I proud to be an INDIAN.. On the other side I ashamed to be under the rule of INDIAN POLITICIANS>>>>>>> :angry_10:

Indian Coast Guard is meant to save people's interest and safe guard shallow waters of Indian coast.. But they never did that.. :angry_6:

They get into work only when cyclone hits any of the commercial boats/ships.. If they were active on Indian coastal areas 26/11 could have averted.. :angry_1:
