KARACHI: A bomb blast targeting mourners near an Imam Bargah Sunday killed two people and injured 23 others here in Karachi's Abbas Town, Geo News reported.

A Moharram-ul-Haram congregation was underway in the "Imam Bargah Mustapha" by the time the improvised explosive device (IED) detonated.

According to media reports the two victims have been identified as Azhar Hasan, 38, and Muhammad Haider, 25.

Source said the IED was meticulously hidden in a motorcycle parked outside a closed milk shop near the targeted worship-place.

"The perpetrators had everyone believe the motorcycle belonged to the shop owner. That is why no one noticed anything so unusual about it", they added. The shop was completely destroyed in the blast.

SSP Crime Investigation Department, Chaudhry Aslam confirmed the bomb was an improvised explosive device (IED).

"A remote control device was used to detonate the bomb", he further added.

The power supply to the area located on Abul Hassan Asfahani Road was also suspended as many electricity poles and wires broke down after the blast.

According to Karachi Electricity Supply Company (KESC), teams have been fielded, which were trying to repair the damaged infrastructure in order to restore power in the area that remains plunged in the darkness.

According to eyewitnesses, the powerful explosion shattered the windowpanes of the nearby buildings.

Rescue services have reached the blast site and the injured were being given first aid, while the critically injured were being rushed to the nearby hospitals which include Patel Hospital, Abbasi Shaheed, Agha Khan, and Liaquat National.

Arrangements have been made in Jinnah and Civil Hospital for the incoming injured blast victims.

The death toll is feared to increase as seven of the injured are said to be in critical condition.

Heavy firing erupted in Abbas Town after the bomb blast while the people staged demonstration against the terrorists and alleged police of failing in security measures.

Cleric Allama Abbas Kumeli condemned the blast and termed it a serious security lapse.

Sindh Governor, Dr. Ishrat-ul-Ebad Khan and Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah have condemned the deadly blast in the port city where security is on high-alert in the wake of terror threats during the holy month of Moharram-ul-Haram.
