I have a Chinese friend who watches a boatload of Korean dramas - are such dramas popular with Chinese over there, or is it simply that he is international that he enjoys such tv shows?

I'm not Mimo , but to give my 50 cents
In China (incl Hong Kong / Taiwan wow!) Korean dramas are quite popular, even to an extent of annoying. When I switch from channel to channel I often find the same drama is aired (or different but still Korean)

Yes, they are very popular, especially among teenage girls. It has nothing to with your friend being international, Korean dramas are indeed very popular in China.

So are American TV series, Gossip Girl, The Big Bang Theory, CSI, etc are well known to Chinese netizens.

If anyone has not seen 'The Wire' series then you can consider your 'series life' miserable

The Wire is perhaps one of the best series I ever saw - its realistic, amazing characters, shows real life of african-americans in Baltimore, intricacies and politics of Police department and so on and so forth.

1) K drama mostly about romance, a theme well received among gals, fancying a cinderella meeting Mr Right...
2) K dramas often make Chinese recall Confucian "family values" , which may have been long lost esp. in small sized families prevailing nowadays. A nagging grandma, a tough mom towards daughter-in-law, an obedient son in an arranged marriage...
