It’s not the case that diplomats do not know this, I am sure politicians do too...

After the Jhatka Xi gave to modi on his first visit, I doubt modi will trust anybody.

The problem is not that Politicos or Bureaucrats do not know. I am pretty sure - given we were for quite long under soviet sphere of influence & NAM sentiment - to be circumspect about US/other powers must be institutionalized in some way.

However problem is with Govt too much reliance on Babus.. and given what we have seen in some examples previously - some Babus tendency to look for plum posts in US or Europe after retirements - may not be necessarily advising whats best in interest of India when he/or she is in service.

Next Indo-Pak conflict will be crucial to know who are our real allies. If US chooses not to side with India ,, they can forever forget any indian assistance against China in Indo-Pacific. This is where USA India interest truly align.

The game is much much bigger. Taking pok by force will do two huge geopolitical moves.

1. Connecting India directly to central Asia. Linking oil gas mineral trade. Reducing Chinese and Russian influence on central Asia.

2. Destroying CPEC. Denying china access to Pakistan and hence arab sagar. Thus reducing Chinese influence in South Asia and Indian Ocean at once.

Both these moves may find favour in deep state across USA and Europe. This will be single biggest setback to rising China after Taiwan independence.

And India has to do it anyway.
