Cross-LoC trade suspension enters fifth day - The Times of India

SRINAGAR: The cross-Line of Control (LoC) trade between India and Pakistan continued to be suspended for the fifth day on Wednesday.

It was suspended after Pakistani authorities detained 27 Kashmiri drivers on Friday in retaliation to the arrest of a Pakistani driver, who was found carrying brown sugar in his truck.

Baramulla deputy commissioner G A Khwaja expressed his helplessness and said Pakistanis were demanding the driver's release. "The kin of the drivers have been visiting my office every day," he said. "But we are helpless and can only console them." Khwaja hoped intervention at the higher level could end the impasse.

Officials said Pakistan has even refused to allow their 29 trucks, which had crossed over to India on Friday, to return

The relatives of the drivers have expressed concern over their continued detention. "We are worried. What crime has my brother committed?" asked Gulzar Ahmad Reshi, whose younger brother, Tanvir Ahmad Reshi, is among the drivers.

He said Tanvir used to transport tomatoes to PoK and it was his third visit across the LoC. "My parents have not had food since Friday when they heard about Tanvir's detention," he said. "We visited Salamabad and got his cloths and other belongings which he was supposed to deposit before crossing over."

His mother, Saria Begum, said she would not touch food till she sees her 35-year-old son and the father of a two-year-old.

Divisional commissioner (Kashmir) Shalendar Kumar said PoK trade director general trade, a retired army officer, claimed the drivers too have diplomatic immunity and the arrested driver be freed and handed over along with the seized brown sugar consignment.

The Pakistani driver, Shafiq Awan, has been booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. He was supposed to be carrying almonds when brown sugar in 148 bags worth Rs 114 crore was recovered from his truck. This was the second such recovery since the cross-LoC trade started in 2008.

Industrialist Shakeel Qalandar said the recovery should not be used as an excuse to halt the trade. "Latest machinery must be utilized to detect such activities. It should not lead to suspension of trade which is an important CBM between the two countries."

This is what a paki commented in pak forum-"Nice strategy,we need to tighten up our screws in Kashmir."
They keep saying "we need to tighten our screws" but they always end up getting their tight asses screwed. All Pakis have a screw loose. They need to tighten that screw and loosen up their asses with vaseline.

Were the smuggled drugs grass/ganja? If it was grass it means Pakis have less to eat. The begum will have to starve. They could try eating Plutonium though.

This driver, Tanvir Ahmad Reshi is one among the other 29 drivers who were not allowed to enter paki land until India frees the culprit Shafiq Awan.

Really, I don't think pakistan has behaved well by not allowing the other drivers to return while detaining the indian drivers on their side of the border.

We should use this opportunity to stop all border trade because as per the latest WHO stats, India is polio free, and Pakistan is battling an epidemic. And these truckers are real carriers of the virus and could set India back. So it's high time we decided to stop the trade.

27 Indian trucks held in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in fresh stand-off | NDTV.com

Authorities in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) have detained 27 trucks carrying goods from India to demand the release of their truck and driver detained by the Jammu and Kashmir Police for allegedly carrying narcotics worth Rs 100 crore.

The incident took place on Friday night following the detention of a truck from PoK - as part of the cross-border trade - from which 100 kg brown sugar was seized at the Salamabad trade facilitation centre in Uri in J&K's Baramulla district. The vehicle is part of 47 trucks that have been held up at the centre.

"The PoK authorities have detained more than 20 trucks and their drivers, demanding the release of the driver and the vehicle from that side which was used for smuggling drugs," Deputy Commissioner of Baramulla GA Khwaja told PTI.

Officials claim that they allowed 46 trucks to return but Pakistani authorities refused to take them back until the seized truck, allegedly carrying narcotics, was also allowed to go. They said talks between the two sides were on to resolve the issue.

As many as 114 packets of brown sugar were recovered from the truck from PoK. The total weight of the seized contraband was around 100 kgs which is worth nearly Rs 100 crore in the international market, Govind Ratan, Sub-Divisional Police Officer, Uri, said.

The challan of the vehicle had mentioned almonds as the goods being imported from PoK, he had said.

This was the second such incident since trade began in 2008 across the Line of Control.

In August last year, police recovered cocaine worth Rs 10 crore from a truck plying on the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad route, at Sheeri in Uri sector.
Everybody is so silent about this incident. It's worrying and it is discriminatory. This is the reason the MEA babus were flamed by common people during Khobragare case. Why don't they fight this battle too?

India should put a naval blockade, and that will solve all the issues.

The pakis want their truck driver back so that they can again send him across with more contraband. Naturally this incident will flame up into a diplomatic crisis if not handled carefully and pakis want that to happen as hell because only then will they get some leverage to at least raise this issue.

They must have succeeded previously with small amounts. So they became confident and sent in a huge cache which was discovered. I hope the army intelligence grill this driver so hard that he reveals who all are also involved in this business.

With elections around the corner, GOI will not take that risk.
Well, if it GOI wants to shed some of it's lethargic image, it may take a calculated risk. Just speculating.

I am skeptical on it; diplomatic isolation, pressurising is an option and cannot be ruled out however, naval blockade is highly unlikely since that will lead to unnecessary escalations on Border and LoC.

I am skeptical that GOI would even try to affect diplomatic isolation. No, they would not risk anything at least until after elections.

India, Pakistan agree to release detained trucks - Hindustan Times

Ending a three-week stand-off, India and Pakistan on Wednesday agreed to release trucks detained in their respective territories but a driver from Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir, who was arrested in North Kashmir with a truck allegedly carrying brown sugar worth Rs. 100 crore, will not be freed.

According to official sources, Pakistan finally agreed not to insist on its demand for release of the arrested driver and his vehicle as the Indian side made it clear that he will have to face the due process of law.[/COLOR]

As per the agreement, PoK will release 27 trucks detained in its territory since January 17 and also take back 48 trucks which have been held up in Salamabad check post at Uri in North Kashmir.

Cross-border trade was suspended from January 18, a day after Jammu and Kashmir police seized a truck coming from PoK, saying it was carrying 114 packets of brown sugar worth Rs. 100 crore in the international market.

The matter was taken up at diplomatic and other levels to find a solution.

PoK authorities had stated that it will release the Indian trucks only after the seized truck along with the driver and drugs were let off by the J-K authorities.

As the deadlock continued, Pakistan suspended cross-border bus service also until its demands were met. This was later resumed on February 3.

However, there is uncertainty over resumption of cross-border trade, the sources said.

Pakistan acting high commissioner was summoned by the external affairs ministry in New Delhi on January 21 in connection with the suspension of Srinagar-Muzaffarabad and Rawalakot-Poonch bus services by Pakistan.

Based on the interrogation of the arrested driver, two more persons were arrested from Bandipore in North Kashmir.

External affairs spokesperson had said that India has repeatedly emphasised to Pakistan to allow the full resumption of travel and trade across the LoC and to hold an immediate meeting of the Trade Facilitation Officers at Kaman so that both sides can exchange information with regard to the narcotic seizures that have been made.

"We regret the fact that for the sake of a drug trafficker caught red handed smuggling narcotics into India, the Pakistani authorities have continued to refuse to allow the resumption of trans-LoC travel and trade that brings great benefits to the people of the state of Jammu and Kashmir," he had said.

Victory to Indian Diplomacy again !!! Well done.

I wonder how the forced Pakistan to do it....we might never get to know.

Srinagar: Cross-Line of Control (LoC) trade on Srinagar-Muzaffarabad route resumed today after remaining suspended for over five weeks.

"The trade between the two sides of Kashmir on Srinagar-Muzaffarabad road resumed today following agreement between the two sides on Monday to this effect," officials said.

They said 22 trucks carrying goods from this side of Kashmir left Salamabad ZTrade Facilitation Centre this morning for Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).

PoK authorities suspended the cross-LoC trade on January 17 after 114 packets of brown sugar were recovered from a truck coming from Muzaffarabad and the driver was arrested.

The PoK side was demanding release of the arrested driver.

Although the officials from the two sides agreed to resume travel services after two weeks, the trade remained suspended till today.
