Troop carrying nuclear submarine

Submarine design process began in 1967 at the 'Volna' Central Ship-designing department, technical design was ready in 1971. In this project the submarine had 3 body frames: the central body contained armament, two reactors, crew and troops; side bodies were planned to have up to 20 amphibious tanks and LMV's.

The submarine length was planned to be 190 m, surface displacement - 18000 tons, maximum submersion depth - 300 m, maximum speed - 18 knots.
Aside of its landing capabilities it could carry out rescue operations with the help of submersibles.
Its armament consisted of six 533-mm torpedo launchers, two 30-mm artillery cannons (А-21ЗМ - put out inside the body under water), the possibility was provided to deploy a mine barrier (up to 282 mines), sonar complex MGK-400 'Rubicon' was put in the fore part of the vessel.

The project was confirmed for building in 1972. Because of multiple design changes in was postponed until 1977, but at this point the 'Sevmash' shipyard already was busy with the first PLA project 941 and other frames were prepared to be laid down, so the project 717 was abandoned, so as other projects of this type.

Interesting concept, but not novel.

If anyone of you have seen the movie "20,000 Leagues under the Sea," you'd have seen something like this (not a tank, but a boat coming out of the opening).

A good idea for extra territorial reach.

Ideal for pincer - land and sea, as for any port city or coast landing to link up with the land forces.
