The body of Sepoy Jagsir Singh of 19 Punjab Regiment, who had attained martyrdom during an exchange of fire with Pakistani forces in Nowshera sector of Jammu and Kashmir yesterday morning, was airlifted here today in an Army helicopter. The body will be taken to his native village, Lohgarh Thakran Wala, for cremation tomorrow and has been kept in an Army installation here.

Deputy Commissioner Ramvir, along with SSP Bhupinder Singh, SDM Harjit Singh and other officials, visited the village to express condolences with the bereaved family.

The DC said a proposal to provide job to the martyr’s wife would be sent to the state government.

Jagsir’s brother Jasbir Singh, who works in Dubai as a driver, has reached home. His sister, who is married and lives in Australia, too is likely to come.

Subedar Swaran Singh, who brought the body here today, said Jasgir kept fighting even after being shot at. “He kept motivating other jawans to keep firing and not bother about him,” said Swaran.

Jagsir had promised his two daughters, aged 7 and 5, that he would come home in a week. The elder one, Nigamjit Kaur, in a state of disbelief, said:“We will not allow papa to go back now when he comes home.”

Sources said Jagsir was targeted by snipers of Pakistan’s Baloch Regiment. Defence sources said though the Indian Army retaliated strongly, Sepoy Jagsir of 19 Punjab Regiment got grievously injured during the exchange of fire.

He later succumbed to his injuries. Jagsir had visited his native village last week and had promised to visit again in the New Year. “Jagsir had called yesterday night to convey his New Year greetings.

Little did we know it will turn out to be our last conversation with him,” recalled the martyr’s mother, Gurmit Kaur, her voice choked. His wife Mohinder Pal Kaur was inconsolable as she remembered her seven-year relationship with her husband.

“We got married in 2010 and were blessed with three kids — Nigamjit Kaur (7), Gurmeet Kaur (5) and Jagdeep Singh (2). On his next visit home, he had promised to take the kids on an outing,” she said. Army officials said Jagsir was a brave and sincere soldier.

“The nation will always remain indebted to him for his supreme sacrifice and devotion to duty,” said an official. The martyr’s body would be brought to his native village on Monday in a helicopter, say sources.

Jagsir had joined the Indian Army in 2004 and had been serving in the Kashmir valley for the last few years

. He did his schooling from the government school in the village and was the youngest of the three siblings.

Tehsildar Vipin Sharma along with other officials met the bereaved family and offered condolences.

Press Trust of India, Jammu, Jan 3 2018, 19:55 IST
A BSF jawan deployed along the International Border (IB) in Jammu was killed today after Pakistan launched unprovoked firing on an Indian post in the first such incident this year, officials said.

Fifty-year-old Head Constable R P Hazra was severely wounded after Pakistani forces "sniped" from across the border in the Samba sector of Jammu and Kashmir at about 4 pm.

The jawan, who was rushed to a nearby medical centre, succumbed to his injuries.

He was born on this day in 1967.

Retaliatory fire has been initiated, a senior BSF officer said.

Hazra, who hails from Murshidabad in West Bengal, has served for about 27 years in the border guarding force. He is survived by a daughter (21) and son (18).

The incident came just days after an army personnel was killed along the Line of Control (LoC) in Rajouri district on December 31 last year.

Sepoy Jagsir Singh (32) was killed when he was shot by Paksitani troops from across the border along the LoC in Rajouri district on the last day of 2017, the year which recorded the highest number of ceasefire violations in the past decade resulting in the death of 35 people including 19 army personnel and four BSF men.

India shares a 3,323-km border with Pakistan, of which 221 km of the IB and 740 km of the LoC fall in Jammu and Kashmir.

On December 23, an Army major and three soldiers were killed along the LoC in Rajouri and in retaliatory action, Indian troops killed three Pakistani soldiers in Pakistan- occupied Kashmir two days later.

The BSF guards the Indo-Pak International Border (IB) in the region.

Four policemen, including ASI Irshad Ahmed, were killed in an IED blast at Sopore in Baramulla district on Saturday. The policeman (52) is survived by his wife, ailing mother and four children, the eldest among whom is 18 years old.

Meanwhile, relatives and family of the slain policeman expressed said the government had not provided chopper facilities to shift the body to Bhaderwah.

“If there is a provision for airlifting Army and CRPF martyrs, why is the facility not being provided to the policemen killed in the line of duty. Why this discrimination? Are they laying down their lives for their motherland?” asked Wajahat Hussain, retired Head Constable and uncle of the slain policeman.

“A large number of people from Bhaderwah and Doda had gathered at our place and were waiting for the body. But we had to wait for 12 hours before the body finally arrived,” Hussain further said.

“The government should provide immediate financial support to the family as Irshad was the lone bread earner in the family,” he said. Doda SSP Mohammed Sharif Khatana said: “We all are pained but we are proud of the police officer who laid down his life for the nation while maintaining law and order. We have buried him with full state honour.”

On allegations that the body had reached after 12 hours, he said: “We don’t have any alternative, but we tried our best to ensure smooth transportation of the body by deploying road opening parties all along the highway.”

“Immediate relief of Rs 1 lakh will be given to the family. The family will also get Central and state ex gratia, benefits under the SRO-43 and under the new policy of DGP SP Vaid at the earliest,” he promised.

The Pawan Hans chopper went missing after it took off from Juhu airport at 10.20am in Mumbai. The oil firm’s sources said the helicopter was in touch with air traffic control till an ONGC checkpoint ‘Papa’, but it lost contact 15 minutes later 30 nautical miles offshore.

According to sources, the helicopter — a Dauphin N3, bearing registration number VT-PWA — was on a normal sortie and was supposed to reach the oil rig at Bombay High at 11am.

The Navy said it had deployed its stealth frigate INS Teg for the search operation while surveillance aircraft P8i is also being press into service.

“A Dornier aircraft and helicopters from Daman (near Dahanu) have also been launched,” a Coast Guard spokesperson said.

The spokesperson added that “some debris has been located”, but did not say if it belonged to the chopper.

Union petroleum minister Dharmendra Pradhan tweeted: “Spoke to Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and requested for help from Coast Guard and other agencies in the search and rescue operations; CMD ONGC has rushed to Mumbai.”

A senior Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) official said the aircraft accident investigation body (AAIB) will probe the Pawan Hans chopper crash.

AAIB is the apex body which probes serious incidents and accidents involving aircraft registered in India and comes under the civil aviation ministry.

Minister of state for civil aviation Jayant Sinha expressed deep anguish over the loss of lives.

“IndiaCoastGuard Ship on receipt of information reached area, located the debris, picked up a body at 1230 hrs,” he said on twitter.

In 2003, dozens were feared dead when an ONGC helicopter crashed into the sea on its way to an offshore exploration site.

Capt VC Katoch, one of the two pilots of the ill-fated Pawan Hans helicopter that crashed off the Mumbai coast this morning, belonged to Panchkula.

The helicopter had seven persons on board, including five ONGC officials. Five bodies have been recovered so far.

Capt Katoch was a former Army Aviation Corps pilot. According to Army sources, Katoch was an alumnus of the National Defence Academy and was commissioned into the Army in December 1985. He later converted to the Army Aviation from his parent arm. He left the Army as a Lieutenant Colonel after putting in 25 years of service.

He had been flying with the national helicopter carrier, Pawan Hans, for about 11 years. Capt Katoch’s associates recall him as a highly professional flier, with a lot of experience, who was amiable, social and got along well with his colleagues.

Capt Katoch, who was married, with two daughters, had a flat in Panchkula but was residing in the Pawan Hans Colony in Mumbai because of his assignment and the nature of his duties.
