since Indians consider themselves to be ancestors of saptrishis (the seven wise sages). the ancient Indians emulated the concept of Gotra to differentiate between two clans. as the population grows the people from same ancestors move away and live in different places, they are not aware of each others ancestry, but they do know their gotra....this significantly reduces the chances of Inbreeding.
as we know, Inbreeding causes poor growth, mental retardation and genetic diseases, etc. it is best to avoid marriages between same gotra.

but as such gotra is just a half measure (and perhaps effective), because maternal gotra is not considered/discarded in next generation kids (but maternal genes are also present- as moter give 1/2 set of genes in an offspring), it is advisable to avoid marriages between the relatives whether maternal or paternal.

Why it is suggested to match blood group before marriage.

Matching blood group before marriage is important. This is to prevent Rh incompatibility. Rhincompatibility can lead to erythroblastosis fetalis (Hemolytic disease of the newborn-HDN).Fetal RBC get destroyed & newborn may get severe anaemia, jaundice. This jaundice is moresevere than Physiological jaundice ( which is the most common and will usually resolve onits own).In very severe form, fetus may die due to heart failure. This is mediated by antigen-antibodiesreaction. Transfer of maternal antibodies across the placenta occurs.This happens when Rh +ve man marries Rh-ve lady. So Rh +ve man should try to avoidmarrying Rh-ve lady. Newborn with erythroblastosis fetalis may need exchange transfusion.Complete blood count, bilirubin levels are done. High levels of bilirubin may lead tokernicterus. Kernicterus means deposition of bilirubin in basal ganglia region & can causesevere brain damage (bilirubin encephalopathy).
In kernicterus, baby will be lethargic,slowlyresponding when breast-feeding is tried. Bulging fontanelles may be seenIn 1st pregnancy problem is less severe but in subsequent pregnancies problem becomesmore severe. Hemolytic disease of the newborn can be treated before birth by intrauterinetransfusion.Incompatibilities of ABO blood types do not cause erythroblastosis fetalis.Erythroblastosis fetalis can be prevented by giving the mother Rh0(D) immune globulin at 28wk gestation and within 72 h of pregnancy termination. Due to preventive treatments given tothe mother, erythroblastosis fetalis is less common nowadays Direct antiglobulin test (DAT,Direct Coomb's test ) is used to diagnose HDN

My 2 cents.

I do not think arranged marriages would be any better in future. Earlier it was a family affair and both guys and girls used to live with parents. So, family status and values were a very good indicator of both bride and groom. Now, the kids stay away from family due to work and study and learn and absorb a lot of new ideas and do not represent family traditions as they did before.

Result, many arranged marriages face similar problems as love marriages because couples stay alone without the parents who provided a mechanism to diffuse couple problems.
