A train travelling through central Pakistan hit an overloaded motorcycle rickshaw at an unmanned railway crossing, killing up to 14 people, a senior police officer says.

Himayun Tarar said the crash Saturday happened near Khanpur village in Shaikhupura district of Punjab province.

Tarar said the rickshaw driver didn't notice the train and tried to cross the tracks.
Reports pegged the death toll at anywhere from 12 to 14.

Tarar said two women and two children were among the dead, while two others who survived the collision were in critical condition at a local hospital.

The officer said many people died before rescue workers reached the crash.

Such crashes routinely occur in Pakistan, as the country has hundreds of unmanned rail crossings and motorists driving overloaded vehicles routinely speed through without looking for oncoming trains.

No more building of level crossings: Saad Rafique | PAKISTAN - geo.tv

Federal Minister for Railways Khawaja Saad Rafique Saturday announced to give compensation of Rs. 0.5 million to the heirs of those who were killed in Sheikhupura train incident, Geo News reported.

Addressing a press conference here, Rafique said that the incident was a national tragedy and its responsibility should not be shifted to one or the other. He said building of level-crossings would no longer be allowed.

He further said that the tragic incident took place due to a mistake of the auto driver and that a team, comprising DCO, DPO Sheikhupora and other officials of Railways, has been constituted to investigate the incident. Investigation team would present the report within 24 hours, he added.

Rafique further said that the train driver was also being investigated and the provincial and district government would not be allowed to construct level-crossings in future, however, permission for building underpass or fly over could be given.
