Three years after Uighur crackdown, Amnesty slams China

BEIJING: China has detained and intimidated dozens of ethnic Uighurs in the far western region of Xinjiang for speaking out on rights abuses following riots in the regional capital three years ago, Amnesty International said.

In July 2009, the capital city of Urumqi was rocked by violence between majority Han Chinese and minority Uighurs that killed nearly 200 people. Many of the Muslim Uighurs, who speak a Turkic language and call Xinjiang home, chafe at Beijing's rule.

Since then, China has executed nine people it accused of instigating the riots, detained and prosecuted hundreds and ramped up spending on security, according to state media and overseas rights groups.

Amnesty, in a report issued late on Wednesday, said it had new testimony that Beijing continues to "intimidate" families seeking information on missing relatives who have revealed human rights abuses during and after the July 2009 protests.

Catherine Baber, Amnesty's director for the Asia-Pacific, said "the general trend toward repression that we see all over China is particularly pronounced" in Xinjiang.

"Chinese authorities must reveal the whereabouts of those individuals subject to enforced disappearance, and end the persecution of their family members seeking answers," Baber said.

The London-based rights watchdog said dozens of Uighur families have come out publicly with stories of family members disappeared since July 2009, though all fear retribution.

The group cited Patigul Eli, the mother of one of the Uighurs who have disappeared after the riots, as saying she had met at least 30 other families in front of police and government buildings in Urumqi trying to get information from the authorities about missing relatives.

Xinjiang is strategically vital to China and Beijing has shown no sign of loosening its grip.

A vast swathe of territory, accounting for one-sixth of China's land mass, Xinjiang holds oil, gas and coal deposits and borders Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and Central Asia.

The Germany-based World Uyghur Congress said it would hold protests, together with other Uighur rights groups, outside Chinese foreign missions in 14 countries on Thursday.

Since the unrest, China has turned its attention to boosting development in Xinjiang and providing greater job opportunities, especially for Uighurs, to try and address some of the root causes of the violence.

But the government has also installed some 40,000 surveillance cameras in Urumqi.

Quite a damning report.

And 40,000 surveillance camera in one city Urumqi?

Why so many surveillance cameras?

Is the situation that bad?

According to the 2000 census, Ürümqi has 2,081,834 inhabitants, with a population density of 174.53 inhabitants/km.

Ethnicity Population Percentage
Han 1,567,562 75.3%

Uyghur 266,342 12.79%

Are the Uighurs really in a more hostile mood than what one hears on and oft that 73% Han are afraid of 12% Uighurs?

No, Hans donot, but Uighurs free for death penalty if they kill less than 2. Uighurs are hans bhai in China, only few terrorists kill but hard to know the few from Uighurs bhai.

But 40,000 surveillance camera is a city which has 73% Han and only 12% Uighurs is odd.

73% means that most of the areas are with the Hans and it is a Han city even if in Xinjiang!

There is no second guessing that.

But there are grounds for resentment if a Uighur town is totally swamped by non Uighurs and they become a very insignificant minority in their own town and land.

Well, it won't be odd if you know that it is legal for Uighurs carring a knife due to their tradition, while carrying a knife is prohibited among Hans.

Those uighurs may claim that Xinjiang is their homeland. But the truth is that it never belonged to them only. It was the area shared by them and mongolian, han, Hui and many other minorities. Actually, they were the minority over that area in history until Qing killed most of mongolians in this area. After that, their ancestors started to move in along with other races.
Traditionally, majority of them are living in southern Xinjiang while Hans are living in North that is where the city is.

BY the way, CCP plan to build surveillance camera network all over China in every major Chinese cities. Chongqing is one glaring example. Even many smaller city with only one million populaiton have build traffic camera in every intersection that can also be used as surveillance camera, so it is not unique in Ürümqi

.
they said they want to cut and eat meat any time using this. but it also could be used for killing.

they also said they need use scimitar to dance. so Han agree.
but anyway Hans now need more Mogolian or Gurkha. if Chinese had them in Xinjiang, those Uighurs will quiet.

Chinese are ashamed , they just got these Hans national weapons.
