Mysore riots: Sri Ram Sene chief arrested

Updated on Saturday, July 25, 2009, 13:40 IST
Zeenews Bureau

Mysore: Police on Friday night arrested Sri Ram Sene chief Pramod Muthalik in Belgaum in connection with July 02 Mysore riots, which claimed three lives.

Muthalik is accused of making inflammatory speeches and inciting violence in Mysore.

The Sri Ram Sene chief will be produced in the Udayagiri police station later in the day.

Meanwhile, Muthalik’s lawyer RD Kulkarni said that he has no knowledge why his client was arrested.

Terming the arrest as unconstitutional, Kulkarni said that he would approach the court soon.

Commenting on the arrest of controversial Hindu leader, Mysore police chief Sunil Agarwal said that he would interrogate him once Muthalik reaches here.

Muthalik had first got the attention when his party activists attacked a pub in Mangalore and beaten up young women. The group had sparked a debate on pub vs Indian culture.

The incident caused much hue and cry in the state of Karnataka and later court barred Muthalik from entering South Karnataka areas.

Muthalik on indefinite fast inside jail to protest his arrest

Bellary (PTI): Sri Rama Sene chief Pramod Muthalik, arrested on Friday night on charges of making inflammatory speeches during communal riots in Mysore, has launched an indefinite fast in a jail here protesting against his detention, police said.

Efforts to persuade the 46-year-old Muthalik, who stirred a controversy in January with an attack on pub goers in Mangalore by his activists, to take some food have failed since he started his "fast" last night, Jail Superintendent P Mallesh told PTI, adding a doctor has been deputed to monitor his health condition.

A court in Mysore had remanded the right wing leader to judicial custody till August seven and the authorities shifted him to Bellary jail on Sunday due to security reasons.

The Sene leader was arrested here on Friday for allegedly making speeches hurting sentiments of a particular community during the Mysore communal clashes in the first week of June which left three persons dead.

On June two, communal clashes broke out in Mysore over the alleged defiling of a madrassa.

Mr. Muthalik had alleged that there was "a conspiracy to throw in jail all those who spoke for Hindus.

"As a protest against this, I will go on hunger strike unto death in jail," he had said.

The court will tomorrow hear the bail application moved by Muthalik.

Conditional bail for Muthalik

Mysore (PTI): Sri Rama Sene chief Pramod Muthalik, arrested on charges of making inflammatory speeches during communal riots in Mysore and lodged in Belgaum jail, was on Tuesday granted conditional bail by a court here.

Local Sene activist Suryanarayana gave a surety of Rs 10,000 and another self-surety of an equal amount is to be given by Mr. Muthalik.

The bail was granted by the Judicial Magistrate First Court.

Earlier, the public prosecutor opposed the bail saying Udayagiri suburbs in Mysore had returned to normalcy and any inflammatory speeches by leaders like Mr. Muthalik would disturb peace.

Lawyers defending Mr. Muthalik, however, maintained that the opposition to the bail was based on allegations and "not substantiated by facts".

The 46-year-old leader of the right-wing group was arrested here last Friday for allegedly making speeches hurting sentiments of a particular community during the Mysore communal clashes in June which left three persons dead. On June 2, communal clashes broke out in Mysore over the alleged defiling of a madrassa.

Mr. Muthalik was remanded in judicial custody till August 7 by a local court and shifted to Bellary jail two days ago where he launched an indefinite fast last night protesting against his arrest.

Tension over desecration of prayer hall
TNN 4 August 2009, 09:56pm IST

CHIKMAGALUR: Subsequent to Monday's desecration of snake stones around a peepal tree, on Tuesday, a place of worship was desecrated in the city.

Miscreants killed a stray pig and placed it at a place where mass prayers are held, leading to a tense situation in the city.

Community members gathered near Ande Chatra to protest, but timely intervention of deputy commissioner R Narayanaswamy and SP M N Nagaraj helped ease the situation. They convinced the irate mob that they had clues about the perpetrators of these acts and would bring them to book in a week.

Community leaders also felt that it was the act of vested interests who wanted to create animosity between communities, and decided not to protest and worsen matters.

It has also been decided to hold a peace march in the city on Thursday, to instil confidence among people of both the communities and also to send a message of unity to the miscreants.

The peace committee meeting was chaired by the DC and SP Nagaraj. A number of organizations and political parties unanimously decided to hold the peace march from the old taluk office premises to the Gandhi statue in the city.

Tension in temple over desecration

Staff Correspondent

MANGALORE: Tension prevailed at the Sharavu temple here on Saturday after it was allegedly desecrated by a few miscreants.

As the news about the desecration spread, hundreds of activists of Bajrang Dal, Vishva Hindu Parishat (VHP), Sri Rama Sene, and Hindu Yuva Sene arrived at the spot and demanded immediate action against the culprits.

Hindutva leaders, Prasad Attavara from the sene, Sharan Pumpwell from the Bajrang Dal, M.B. Puranik from the VHP, Franklin Montiero from the Bharatiya Janata Party, and Nagesh Bajalakeri from the Hindu Yuva Sene, arrived on the scene and played a role in calming the activists from going on the rampage.

But, the presence of so many leaders led to confusion about who was in charge and some restless activists took it upon themselves to stop vehicles on the road and shout slogans. They were, however, reined in by the police and the Hindutva leaders. Superintendent of Police A.S. Rao, who arrived on the scene asked the restive activists for time till Monday to arrest the persons responsible for the act.

Now me going to tell you all something I know personally. Every Since BJP came to power in Karnataka with Gowdas help, they started strengthing the Sangh Parivar thugs. JD(S) had a strong hand in this strengthtening, it was a Political Ploy which they thought wouldnt backfire.

Now The likes of Muthalik and company roam around freely in Mangalore and Mysore spreading religious hatred. They dont stop there, they even deem people "NOT HINDU ENOUGH"!!! Yes, they brand hindus themselves who are moderate. I dont know what BJP derives out of this. Now they seem to sense the danger themselves and are trying to get out of the situation.

Just think, this act might have been done by some anti socials just to fan flames, but look how it affects peoples perception of the Government! Lax attitude at best!!

The Congress is no Saint, they have done enough harm to Indian Secularism themselves, but sad seeing that no one is clean when it comes to using Religious Sentiments! Perfect script for our Neighboring countries to once again rake up issues and for the Resident Superpower to Say we are oppressing minorities! Who can blame them eh? !

We all Should be ashamed of ourselves!

Lets not make this about Wikipedia now but let me tell you. In the forum world, Wikipedia is not a trusted source, that much I know, even in academic circles.
