China says citizens arrested in India were tourists

Jan 20 (Reuters) - China said on Thursday that three of its nationals who were arrested in India on suspicion of money laundering and spying on border security camps were actually tourists who mistakenly crossed the border from Nepal.

"Related reports do not reflect reality. Recently, some Chinese tourists were on holiday on the Nepal-India border and mistakenly entered India and were detained by Indian police," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said.

"China's embassy in India is finding out more details from the Indian side, and demands India deals appropriately with the situation," Hong added at a regular news briefing. He did not elaborate.

The arrests were made in Uttar Pradesh state close to India's border with Nepal, Indian police said on Wednesday, adding that the accused, including a woman, said they were employees of Chinese telecoms equipment maker Huawei Technologies .

Huawei said the company was aware of the arrests and was cooperating with local authorities to determine the facts.

The arrests came a few weeks after Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao visited India in a display of warmth that, however, failed to lift the veil of suspicion between the two nations or resolve a disputed border, a legacy from their brief 1962 war.

Last year, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh warned that China, India's main rival for regional resources and geopolitical clout, was seeking to expand its influence in South Asia.

Those comments came after India briefly banned imports of Chinese telecoms gear over spying fears.

If true it will be the first case of tourists putting cell phone towers instead of relaxing on a vacation!

LOL

Imagine what would happen if a brown guy began taking such photos in America, of military outposts etc. It's not done.

National security should not be taken lightly when a legitimate threat exists, and unfortunately India is surrounded by these legitimate threats.

Okay I want to follow your logic here

1. they come to work in Nepal
2. Have no passports on them, No Visas nothing
3. Cross a border
4. Go to a military installation to take pictures

how many " TOURIST" do you know , walk into another country through a border, have no proper ID and yet remember to go into a military instillation site and taking pictures? Come on LOL.

The three Chinese nationals arrested from Bahraich district of Uttar Pradesh under mysterious circumstances would be deported to China, government sources said on Friday.Top sources in the ministry of home affairs told Headlines Today that New Delhi has decided to send all three back to China.

The move comes after Chinese government touched base with India on Friday morning and protested the arrests, made earlier this week. A senior Chinese embassy official met the director (East Asia) in the ministry of external affairs and handed over a note verbale.

On Thursday, the Chinese foreign ministry had claimed that the arrested people were tourists who had crossed into India by mistake and had sought consular access to them.

The UP Police had rubbished China's claim and said that the trio was held while clicking photos of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) camps, which are prohibited areas. The police said that the SSB seized an Indian permanent account number (PAN) card, issued by the income tax department, from them.

This is political satire below:

BREAKING NEWS! China now changes it's policy to open borders. You no longer need to get a visa and if you inadvertently cross a border, you are shown the red carpet to the nearest Chinese military establishment for a photo Op. Tibetans need not apply! BUT wait, what's that in fine print - if Indians try to build anything on its side of the fence / border--- then immediately armed troops from china shall besiege upon it!

BAHRAICH: China has started mounting pressure on India to remove charges of spying on three Chineese intruders Lui Yang, Chen Rang and Li Jui Dang, who were apprehended on January 17th at Rupaidiha check-post on Indo-Nepal border.

Chinese foreign ministry is issuing statements regularly for protection of its nationals, and now Chinese ambassador Xang Yang has taken over the issue.

Intelligence agencies deployed on Indo-Nepal border said that Yang had a long meeting with foreign secretary Nirupama Roy in this connection.

Yang expressed doubt about the impartial investigation into the matter as well as the role of Indian police.

It is learnt that the foreign ministry has told Chinese foreign department that the law of the country is working impartially and with full transparency. The ministry has also contacted foreign ministry in Nepal in a bid to get complete details about the Chineese intruders.
