US Airborne Lazer
This is a laser that is mounted in a commercial type aircraft, the Boeing 747. It has been said that this was the perfect weapon to shoot down missiles while they are being launched. The laser is so large that the internals of the plane are filled with its parts. Well this new wonder weapon has failed the last two tests so far this year. The problem was said to be in the tracking system. We have been playing with this weapon for quite a while now and it makes one wonder why we can't get it right? When Robert Gates got involved, he scaled the program back to an experimental program. I guess he knew that this weapon certainly wasn't ready, but the contractors that are involved which are Boeing, Northrop Grumman and Lockheed Martin, have very powerful friends in Congress and it was probably impossible for him to cancel the project entirely. This project has been going on since 1996 and has cost the American taxpayer in excess of $4 billion so far and it still doesn't work. Here is what Gates had to say about the weapon, "The reality is that you would need a laser something like 20 to 30 times more powerful than the chemical laser in the plane right now to be able to get any (safe) distance from the launch site to fire," Putting this statement into English, it means that this weapon will never work in its current state.

TBD-1 Devastator US Navy Torpedo Bomber

Slow
Anemic defensive armament
Practically Unarmored
Most of the Operational crews were killed at Midway where out of 3 squadrons not one scored a hit on the Japanese fleet. 41 went to fight, 4 came back.

FP-45 Liberator

View attachment 161560

truly one of the worst guns ever made and mass produced

it was mostly smuggled/shipped and airdropped to resistance forces in occupied regions

it had bad quality, it was singel shot and had a effective range o not even..... 10m

its said 1 FP-45 could be faster produced then reloded

Actually a T-55 fitted with a jet engine based runway ice melting unit, quite successful in Siberia not a failure by any stretch of the imagination. nowadays variants based upon KRaz chassis are still used pic below

Hard to agree that this is a worst weapon. It was a ambitious TD & has given lot of encouragement to research deeper not just for US but for many other countries including India. Its costly but there is no greater price than that of shooting down missile in its boost phase.
