if i have understood the game correctly, there is a section in US establishment which wants Russia to be the other pole, not china. they are giving space for Russia to manoeuvre, because obama had shut russia down completely.

we can also see that American liberals for past 6-8 years have been projecting Russia as the big bad wolf, while covering up for china's expansionist mindset.

powers behind Trump probably want to cede some space to russia, so that it can earn some bargaining chips at the power table.

incidentally recently Ram Madhav also talked about russia pushed into corner without manoeuvring space against china, in a different context though.
What I think is USA deep is state is divided. The old guard wants economic parternership with china and keep using Russia as red threat to fool the people . They supported Hillary but lost.

Another fraction wants to take on china head-on and wants to welcome Russia back as a Christian / western power much like as in times of tzar against ottoman ( Muslim empire). They support trump and trade war against China.

But Syria is much more complex. Read next post.

Syria is not just about Russian manuevering space. It's about oil game. The Arabs want pipeline from Syria to turkey to Europe cutting off Russian leverage over Europe. Turkey wants to gain leverage with control over new pipeline.

Russia can't let this happen it's non- negotiable hence Russia intervened so heavily despite lacking financial muscle.

Russia wants turkey to move away from Arab states and USA and may be willing to compromise on Kurdish issue.

USA has no clear policy . Like I posted before deep state is divided. It wants to mend ties with Russia but also wants to free Europe of Russian oil dependence. Hence allowed turkey to rollover Kurds this time .

Russian have two cards to play now
- offer pipeline from Russia to Europe via turkey and roll over Kurds and foil Arab plan to link Europe via Syria.
- support kurds and make sure Turks fail and hence sabotage Arab plan for pipeline.

With impeccable timing, Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov just started a meeting with Kurdistan Prime Minister Masrour Barzani. Aside from Moscow's role as Syrian powerbroker, Kremlin-controlled oil giant Rosneft is drilling in Kurdistan and building export pipelines

Trump Administration Appears to Reverse Syria Decision

A senior administration official on an organized call with reporters appeared to contradict President Donald Trump about Syria policy late Monday, refuting interpretations of his statements from earlier in the day that prompted broad outrage from supporters and opponents alike.

The U.S. is not removing its forces from Syria in the face of a Turkish incursion, said the official, speaking on the condition of anonymity. Rather, the president ordered roughly 50 special operations troops in northern Syria to relocate to a different part of the country after he learned that Turkey has planned an offensive against U.S.-backed Kurdish forces in Syria. The official said that offensive had not yet begun.

Greece would join France if it entered Syria war, Greek MP says
DAILY SABAH
ISTANBUL
Published 09.10.2019

A parliament member of Greece's ruling New Democracy party implied Wednesday that Athens would join France if it entered the conflict in Syria.

"If there is a war involving France, Greece would also join," Angelos Syrigos said while discussing Turkey's operation in northeastern Syria in an interview with a Greek news broadcaster.

Turkey and the Syrian National Army launched their much-awaited operation against Daesh and the People's Protection Units (YPG) terror groups in northern Syria on Wednesday.

France, along with the U.S., has provided support to the YPG in the past, hosting its leaders multiple times in Paris for talks.

French President Emmanuel Macron hosted a senior YPG leader for talks on Tuesday "to show that France stands alongside the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) as they are partners in the fight against Daesh and that we are very worried by the possibility of a Turkish operation in Syria," a presidential aide told AFP.

Turkey has said the terrorist group PKK and its Syrian extension the YPG constitute the biggest threat to Syria's future, jeopardizing the country's territorial integrity and unitary structure. Most of northeastern Syria is controlled by the SDF, which is dominated by YPG terrorists.

Turkey has also stressed that supporting terrorists under the pretext of fighting Daesh, as France has done, is unacceptable.

France's European Affairs Minister Amelie de Montchalin said Wednesday that France, Germany and Britain were working on a joint declaration "which will be extremely clear on the fact that we very strongly condemn" the Turkish campaign.

Turkey plans to resettle 2 million Syrians in a 30-km-wide (19-mi) safe zone to be set up in Syria, stretching from the Euphrates River to the Iraqi border, including Manbij. However, the presence of terror groups such as the YPG risk its formation.

Turkey has rid an area of 4,000 square km (1,544 square miles) in Syria of terrorist groups in two separate cross-border operations since 2016. Operation Euphrates Shield and Olive Branch purged the region of the terrorist groups Daesh and the YPG.

The two operations were in line with the country's right to self-defense borne out of international law, U.N. Security Council resolutions, especially No. 1624 (2005), 2170 (2014) and 2178 (2014), and under the right to self-defense under Article 51 of the U.N. Charter, while being respectful of Syria's territorial integrity.

In its more than 30-year terror campaign against Turkey, the PKK — listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the U.S. and the EU — has been responsible for the deaths of some 40,000 people, including women, children and infants.

EXCLUSIVE: TURKEY BOMBS US SPECIAL FORCES IN SYRIA ATTACK

A contingent of U.S. Special Forces has been caught up in Turkish shelling against U.S.-backed Kurdish positions in northern Syria, days after President Donald Trump told his Turkish counterpart he would withdraw U.S. troops from certain positions in the area.

Newsweek has learned through both an Iraqi Kurdish intelligence official and senior Pentagon official that Special Forces operating on Mashtenour hill in the majority-Kurdish city of Kobani fell under artillery fire from Turkish forces conducting their so-called "Operation Peace Spring" against Kurdish fighters backed by the U.S. but considered terrorist organizations by Turkey.

The senior Pentagon official said that Turkish forces should be aware of U.S. positions "down to the grid." The official could not specify the exact number of personnel present, but indicated they were "small numbers below company level," so somewhere between 15 and 100 troops.

The incident came as Defense Secretary Mark Esper assured reporters that up to 50 Special Force Operators had been repositioned from "two small outposts" near the Syrian border as Turkey commenced a unilateral operation opposed by the Pentagon. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had long warned he would storm the border to establish a so-called "safe zone" and, after the White House announced Sunday that U.S. troops would stand aside, he launched the operation earlier this week.
