sandeepdg I think you miscalculated the numbers S-300PMU and S-300FM are different versions expected to be installed in different versions of Kirov Class still Peter the Great is believed to have a massive amount of fire power with a speculated total amount of missile exceeding 500 different types of missiles.

SPIEZ I think you misunderstood my point, as per the thread title 'Future Indian Navy' it is most necessary to produce or procure a LRSAM before any plans for Battle cruisers, Chinese air defence destroyers will carry LRSAM. BTW US cancelled one of its project upon a version of a concept of modern battleships. More or less it is seen as a lesser feasible option.
Thanks for pointing that out, mate. So you see that, even if we had a ship which has a payload of around 200 missiles including 100 SAMs and 100 cruise missiles, even that would be big boost for IN !

Don't know about LR-SAM for IN, though the Barak-8 is being developed for MR-SAM purpose. But I still feel, its not adequate. We seriously need a LR-SAM for IN with a range of 200-300 kms.

100 SAM's ?
Why are such a large numbers needed ? Ships have to essentially protect against Anti-ship missiles, which can easily and effectively done by CIWS(Close-in weapon system - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia).

Long-Range Surface To Air Missiles for what ?
Again the only threat for ships are cruise missiles, which can be easily eliminated by point defense SAMs or Medium Range SAMs, which in it itself is an overkill.
There are current Ballistic missiles which can be used for ships, though the Chinesse are working on it. Still the Ballistic Anti-Ship Missile(BASM) will not be accurate, one of the main reasons why developed nations haven't resorted to building a BAMS.

Actually Spiez, ships have three layers of defense - sometimes four.

1. Long Range SAM - against enemy fighters/ bombers and Ballistic Missiles.
2. Medium/ Short Range SAM - against aircraft, Ballistic missiles and Cruise missiles
3. CIWS - (primarily Gatling guns) - against Helos, cruise missiles and aircraft launched ASMs

Any one of them is not enough and even a combination of two are not good enough for modern naval warfare scenarios.

CIWS is very limited - against fast moving cruise missiles and "stealth" missiles it provides very little defense. Even against regular Cruise missiles, it's chances of success are about 50:50. You really do not want to leave the defense of a multi-million dollar to a billion dollar ship to CIWS alone.

Helo's, Cruise missiles, Anti-ship cruise missiles are the only threats currently present aren't they ?

There are no existing Ballistic anti-ship missile, so why the LR-SAM ?

Ahh - no one develops a dedicated "anti-ship ballistic missile" - a "generic" BM is fine for anti-ship roles, especially if it is nuke-tipped.
The designation for "anti-ship" cruise missiles are primarily because of their speed (mostly supersonic) and terrain (ocean-surface) following capabilities. Ballistic missiles are way more difficult to intercept and do not need to have "higher speed" to hit their targets - generally they do not need active (or passive guidance) like the cruise missiles.
