ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - The chief financier of the Taliban-linked Haqqani network militant group has been shot dead in the Pakistani capital of Islamabad, militant sources told Reuters on Monday.

"Nasiruddin Haqqani was killed in Islamabad while travelling in a car with a few other unidentified people," one Taliban source said, adding that the attack took place on Sunday.

"His body has been moved to North Waziristan."

In June 2010, the United States Treasury sanctioned Nasiruddin and two other Afghans as "specifically designated global terrorists" for their work as senior leaders and financiers for the Taliban and the affiliated Haqqani network.

The United States has also branded the Haqqani network, a group U.S. officials blame for high-profile attacks in Afghanistan, as a terrorist organisation in September 2012.

Pakistani police and government officials were not immediately available for comment.

The deceased Nasiruddin Haqqani was the elder brother of Sirajuddin Haqqani, the guerrilla commander who heads the Haqqani network and has directed some of the most brazen attacks against U.S. forces in Afghanistan.

Taliban sources confirmed that Haqqani's body had been moved to North Waziristan, the stronghold of the Taliban insurgency, which shares a border with Afghanistan.

"His funeral is scheduled for 4 p.m. today in the Miranshah area," a source said, referring to the regional capital.

The Haqqani network is named after the brothers' father, Jalaluddin Haqqani, a veteran guerrilla commander from southeast

Nasiruddin Haqqani shot dead near Islamabad

Suddenly seems like 'pop the middleman' season in Af-Pak.
He was the top financier and networking unit of Haqqani Network. Nasiruddin Haqqani a crucial cog of Haqqanis terror system was shot dead near Islamabad today.
This comes days after Mehsud the leader of Pak Taliban was killed. Earlier today, two bikers sprayed automatic rifle fire on Nasir who was on road and fled away.
Nasir was son of high ranking Taliban leader of pre WoT days in the Taliban. His brother Badruddin Haqqani was already killed in a drone strike in August last year.

BBC News - Nasiruddin Haqqani: Senior militant 'shot dead' in Pakistan
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Excerpts :-

One of the most senior leaders of the Haqqani militant network has been shot dead near the Pakistani capital, Islamabad, reports say.
Nasiruddin Haqqani, who was in his early 30s, was the group's financier and a son of its founder Jalaluddin.
Reports say his body has been taken for burial to the North Waziristan tribal area near the Afghan border.

It is not clear who shot him or why. Nasiruddin Haqqani was on a US list of global terrorists.
The details of his death are still unclear, but reports say he was killed in a shooting incident in the city of Rawalpindi, next to Islamabad, on Sunday night.

Another Haqqani brother, Badruddin, who had been the group's operational commander, was killed in a drone strike in August last year.

Nasiruddin's elder brother, Sirajuddin Haqqani, now leads the group, while Jalaluddin remains its figurehead.
As the group's main fundraiser, Nasiruddin frequently travelled to the oil-rich sheikhdoms of the Middle East to solicit donations.
.....
.....

They say his appearance gave no clue to his militant connections. His code name was "the doctor", possibly because of a degree that he had studied for.
His death, if confirmed, will be a major blow to the Haqqanis, who will need to find someone else to spearhead their efforts to secure financing.

BBC correspondents say the killing will pile pressure on the Pakistani government because Nasiruddin's death is reported to have happened on Pakistani soil.
Afghan authorities will be angry that someone who had been working to facilitate peace moves with the Afghan Taliban has been removed from the picture.

His death comes just 10 days after a US drone killed Pakistani Taliban leader Hakimullah Mehsud, who was also reported to be on the verge of entering peace talks with the government in Islamabad.
Those moves towards talks are now over, and he has been replaced by the more hardline Mullah Fazlullah, who swiftly ruled out any negotiations.
Attempts to begin talks between the US, the Afghan Taliban and the government in Kabul have been stalled since June.

Re: Taliban-linked Haqqanis' Financier Nasiruddin shot dead in Pakista

so this was done maybe by NDS ? or another one of the US sponsored attacks ?
Could be either. There are plenty of assassins-for-hire to be found in Pakistan.

I was just guessing the NDS because attacks on Quetta Shura members have also been carried by men on bikes.

Nasir might have been acting middleman to some talks.
He was said to be well networked. Well .. guess it bites back when your business is of this kind.
pakis are banking on haqqanis after US withdrawal from Afghanistan. things getting interesting.

There was no claim of responsibility for Mr. Haqqani's death, although conflicting views about the identity of his killers abounded. Afghan intelligence officials quickly blamed an internal Haqqani family dispute. But among Pakistani spymasters, speculation was rife that their Afghan counterparts had ordered the hit, possibly through a network of Afghan operatives in Pakistan.
New York Times (as well as ISI) thinks it might be an NDS hit after all.

It was probably a fight over drug money, or looted weapons.
though they think they fight for a common cause, they are all squabbling against each other for power, right ?

Drive-by shootings are one of the NDS' tactics for dealing with Afghan Taliban leaders hiding in Pakistan.
This International top Terrorist was killed on the outskirts of Islamabad which is Paki capital.

Osama was also found near Islamabad living lavishly in protection of Pak Army.

This speaks volume and PROVES that Pakistan is a Terrorist State. US is using drones which is the best and poor Pakis can just cry.

Paki military and ISI are not against the drones. They sometimes make a lot of noise through their puppet mullahs and Zaid Hamid, because they want the technology for themselves.

The truth is that the ISI supplies GPS coordinates of up to 6 digits to the CIA. That's how most TTP guys get killed.
