First swine flu case in Warangal
TNN, Jul 25, 2010, 12.21am IST

WARANGAL: The first swine flu case in the district was recorded on Saturday with the admission of one Gattu Venu, 37, in the swine flu ward of MGM Hospital in Warangal.

According to reports, Venu was suffering from high fever and throat pain for the last one week and was taking treatment from a local RMP at his native Peddapuram village of Athmakur mandal. But with the condition deteriorating, his family members rushed him to a private nursing home in Warangal town, where the medical experts suggested shifting Venu to MGM Hospital.

He was admitted in the swine flu ward of MGM on Tuesday after doctors suspected him to be suffering with swine flu. Venu's blood samples were sent to the Institute of Preventive Medicine (IPM) at Hyderabad. "We got the patient's reports on Saturday and he has tested positive for swine flu," said Dr E Ashok Kumar, superintendent of the hospital.

"The patient's condition is stable and he is out of danger," he added. The doctors also examined Venu's parents and sent their samples to the IPM centre at Hyderabad to find out whether they too were infected.

With swine flu cases increasing in the state capital, precautionary measures were being implemented at the 1,000-bedded MGM Government Hospital by way of vaccination of the duty doctors, nurses and paramedical staff. According to the superintendent, the government has sent 500 doses of the anti-swine flu vaccine to the hospital meant for the duty doctors and staff at casualty and emergency wards, as they would be treating the swine flu victims.

'H1N1 finds favourable conditions during rains'
Umesh Isalkar, TNN, Jul 26, 2010, 03.19am IST

PUNE: Going by the number of fresh cases of swine flu — an average of 25 to 30 every day — the infection rate of H1N1 influenza has increased significantly in Pune district in July.

As many as 341 cases have been recorded till date this month, as against 77 cases in June. The mortality rate vis-à-vis infected cases is also witnessing a rise with 25 deaths having been registered this month as against nine in the previous month.

"Most of the cases this month are from the rural parts of the district. The virus is making strides in rural areas," said a state health official.

While the number of positive cases were in the range 2 to 10 every day, last month, as many as 29 fresh cases were reported on July 29, 46 on July 23 and 38 on July 22.

According to experts, the virus is a winter phenomenon in western countries. But in India, it could find the same favourable conditions during the monsoon. "The H1N1 group of viruses proliferate more when the weather is humid and slightly cooler. The virus is an airborne one and humidity and cool weather are conducive factors for its survival," said Arun Jamkar, dean of Sassoon general hospital.

The spread of the swine flu virus is thought to occur in the same way as that of seasonal flu virus. Influenza spreads from person to person by the respiratory route. If an infected person coughs, sneezes or even talks or sings loudly, s/he generates aerosols or droplets of saliva with virus particles in it, explained paediatrician Sharad Agarkkhedkar. "These particles get deposited in the respiratory tract of the people nearby, who, in turn, get infected. These particles also get deposited on inanimate objects (called fomites) like napkins, handkerchiefs, door knobs, etc. The virus can remain viable on such surfaces for a week or two. If a person touches these surfaces and then touches his/her nose, mouth or eyes, the virus can get transmitted," said microbiologist Siddharth Dalvi.

Nasovac, Vaccine to Fight Swine Flu, Out In Bangalore

Submitted by Satish Karat on Mon, 07/26/2010 - 12:57

Lokayukta Justice Santosh Hegde rolled out the first indigenous intra-nasal vaccine to fight swine flu, under the name Nasovac. On Sunday, he gave the first dose to a five-year-old child at Isha Diagnostics. The deadly H1N1 virus can be averted by taking two puffs in each of the nostrils. One has to pay 250 rupees in order to get inoculated against H1N1.

According to the consultants, "The vaccine is free from side effects and can be administered to anybody, except pregnant women and children below three years. To be on the safer side, we recommend that the vaccine be taken every year and it's safe".

But, the officials of the Serum Institute, who are also the manufacturers of the vaccine share that the vaccine has been already tested on pregnant rats and has been deemed safe for use. However, no trials have been conducted on pregnant women so far, so the doctor's advice is a must in such a case.

Drug Controller General of India has approved the vaccine for usage by any individual, who is above three years of age. SII Executive Director (Operations) Adar C Poonawalla shared that as much as 45 million dosages will be produced annually and this fiscal year, SSI, which is the country's largest vaccine maker, aims to sell about 20 million dosages.

4-year-old girl dies of swine flu in Pandesara
TNN, Jul 21, 2010, 10.42pm IST

SURAT: A four-year-old girl, who was under treatment for swine flu, died here on Wednesday afternoon. Muskan Gopal Singh was admitted to Surat Municipal Institute of Medical and Education Research (SMIMER) at 10 pm on Tuesday in a severe condition.

Furthermore, recent history of the victim shows no visit outside the city. She might have got infected within the city itself, doctors attending to her said.

Muskan, a resident of Bhakti Nagar in Pandesara, was in a very serious condition when admitted to the hospital. Although the swine flu infection was confirmed only on Wednesday, she was given medication for the virus soon after her admission. But, the treatment could not help. Samples of four other suspected swine flu patients were tested, but were found negative.

Three positive cases of swine flu were reported from Ved Road area of the city on Tuesday. Two of the three patients were confirmed positive by doctors on Tuesday, taking the total number of positive cases in the city to 159. Dr Piyush Shah, nodal officer, H1N1 cell, Jilla Panchayat, said, "A five-year-old son of a 28-year-old man, who had tested positive for the virus on Monday, too, is affected by swine flu. Both are receiving treatment in New Civil Hospital of the city and are residents of Kuber Park Society of Ved Road area."

Besides, a 35-year-old male, who lives in Vishram Nagar on Ved Road, reported positive for the virus on Tuesday. He is receiving treatment in Harekrishna Hospital in the area. In the last few days, five new patients in the city have tested positive for the dreaded virus. One of the patients happened to be a pregnant woman, who had to be put on ventilator.

Docs against rampant Tamiflu use
TNN, Jul 30, 2010, 03.21am IST

KOLKATA: Treatment regime for H1N1 patients in Kolkata should be stricter and use of Tamiflu the only recognized drug for the influenza regulated, feel experts.

Screening of suspects should also be done on an emergency basis if swine flu has to be effectively countered. With the virus now spreading fast, chances of an alteration in its strain could not be ruled out. A mutated H1N1 virus could be drug-resistant.

"At the present rate, scores of patients would be affected in a few weeks. The more the virus spreads and survives in the community, the sooner it will undergo a change. An altered strain could be dangerous as H1N1 is very infectious, though rarely fatal. It should be made sure that Tamiflu is prescribed only to patients who have been confirmed by tests to be swine flu patients," said Barun Roy, virologist and an animal diseases expert.

Though the state health department has issued a guideline restricting the use of the drug, some private clinics and hospitals were prescribing Tamiflu to suspects, it has been alleged. "We have come across patients who have been prescribed the drug even though they were not suffering from H1N1. This could be dangerous in the long run," said virologist Tomonash Bhattacharya.

The priority should be on putting brakes on the spread of the virus. This should begin with the identification of high-risk patients young children and the elderly suffering from multiple disorders or diseases like chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder, diabetes and cancer. "This group remains more vulnerable since their resistance levels are low. They are more likely to get affected. So, these patients need to be isolated quickly and kept under vigil. Doctors have to make sure that they are given protection against secondary infection," said Roy. Both swine flu patients to die in Kolkata this year were victims of multiple disorders.

Experts pointed out that the stress should be on quick diagnosis. "Swap samples of suspects need to be tested fast. But you can't use Tamiflu indiscriminately. That would hasten mutation of the virus," said Debashish Basu, preventive medicine specialist.

KMC roped in to tackle swine flu menace
TNN, Jul 29, 2010, 01.06am IST

KOLKATA: The state health department has decided to rope in the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) as the nodal agency for distribution of medicines to prevent the growing menace of swine flu.

At a meeting held between the top brass of the state health department and senior officials of the KMC health department at Swashtha Bhawan in Salt Lake on Wednesday, it was decided that the state health department would hand over preventive swine flu medicines to the KMC health department, which in turn would distribute these among the doctors and health workers of the private hospitals. The authorities of Infectious Disease (ID) Hospital will then take charge of supplying medicines to other government hospitals where swine flu patients are being treated. These hospitals include RG Kar Medical College and Hospital and Medical College & Hospital, Kolkata.

The state government also plans to arrange a swine flu vaccination programme through the KMC health department for the doctors, nursing and paramedical staff of the private hospitals. The experts at the meeting recommended a single dose of Tamiflu for 10 days for those who have come in close contact of any swine flu patient.

"Those who have come 6 feet close to any patient suffering from swine flu need to take Tamiflu for 10 days as a preventive measure. Doctors, nurses and other paramedical staff need vaccination to prevent contamination of the disease," said chief municipal health official (KMC) Debdwaipayan Chatterjee. "Our health officials will visit all major private hospitals and distribute Tamiflu for the doctors and other health workers. Once it is done, we may need to take up the vaccination programme," said mayor-in-council member overseeing the KMC health department, Atin De.

This apart, the state health department will organise a training programme at the KMC headquarters within a week to train the doctors of government hospitals and private hospitals. "This apart, we have asked the executive health officials of all 15 boroughs to keep a close tab on the patients coming to the KMC clinics with symptoms of swine flu. Any suspected patients will be referred to the ID Hospital," the MMiC said on Wednesday.

Two more people tested positive for swine flu in West Bengal on Friday, taking the total number of confirmed cases in the state to 93 this year, the health department said. "Two confirmed cases of swine flu were reported on Friday. The total confirmed cases of H1N1 infection are now 93. The total
deaths are three during 2010," the department said in a statement.

A total 29 people are admitted to hospitals due to swine flu and two of them are critical, the department said.

Three people died of swine flu earlier this month, becoming the first three victims of the disease in West Bengal.

In 2009, a total 135 people were affected by swine flu in the state. However, there were no casualties then.

Swine flu: No screening of travellers, health dept to focus on treatment
TNN, Aug 4, 2010, 03.39am IST

JAIPUR: Health officials will not be screening travellers for swine flu symptoms, even as Rajasthan registered two cases of the disease over the past week. Both the patients contracted it during their travel to neighbouring states. The health department had previously sought permission from the airport authority for screening. However, now they refuse the utility of the exercise and instead are focusing on improving the treatment facilities.

"The H1N1 virus has already penetrated a large population of the country, thus containment of the disease is difficult," said a senior health official. "The disease was discovered last year and spread across the nation despite the screening drives. This year we have better understanding of the disease and even vaccines are available," he added.

Following the previous experience with the disease the health officials are confident of better management this season. The isolation and restriction of suspected patients might be eased while treatment of critical cases will be initiated on symptoms before arrival of the test reports. Stress will be laid on treatment and promoting preventive behaviour among masses.

As monsoon gets active in north India experts have indicated a rise in incidence of the disease in the region. There is special focus on pregnant women due to low immunity level. Twenty one pregnant women in Kerala have reportedly died of swine flu during the second wave of the disease.

Swine flu has registered its presence in the state after a gap of nearly six months, prior to that large number of cases were reported from Kerala and Maharashtra.

Two vaccines for swine flu available
TNN, Aug 3, 2010, 05.46am IST

MARGAO: Officials from the directorate of heath services said there are two vaccines against swine flu that people can choose from and that they were available with all private practitioners also. While one is a nasal spray the other is to be taken intramuscularly.

Sources at Margao's Hospicio hospital informed that a special ward is in operation at Margao's TB hospital. "It had been established last year when H1N1 cases were reported in the state along with several cases in other parts of the country. The ward is especially established to cater to H1N1 patients," the doctor said adding that presently there are no cases with swine flue symptoms admitted either at Hospicio or at the special ward at the TB hospital.

Explaining why the throat swab results of a woman who died on Thursday of swine flu was received only on Monday, a doctor said that the swabs are collected by DHS and sent outside the state for analysis.

State epidemiologist Jose D'Sa said, "Eight samples were sent on Friday and the report received on Sunday revealed that two samples were positive for H1N1. While one is of the migrant woman from Karnataka who arrived in Goa with her family two months back and died on July 29, the other is of a 59-year-old man who arrived from the Gulf. The man is recovering."

I have taken a swine flue vaccine. the first dose is a nasal spray. Its validity is for 1 year. Taking the second dose makes life time vulnerable to swine flu. Dont know the second dose cost but first dose nasal spray cost rs 200 and it was a govt authorized drive. So make sure private guys dont cheat you by charging more.

The Vaccine is from Serum Institute and the results are pretty good and no side effects unlike 2 other vaccines that were launched in march-april.

The current vaccine cant be taken by pregnant women, below 5 years and above 60 years. Vaccines for such people is still under testing and launched in couple of months.

However the Zydus Cadila has its price tagged at Rs. 390 per shot.

Swine flu claims four in Marathwada, toll 14
Syed Rizwanullah, TNN, Aug 6, 2010, 05.32am IST

AURANGABAD: Swine flu has resurfaced in Marathwada, with four confirmed patients and an equal number of suspected ones succumbing to the contagion in the last 36 hours, taking the toll in the region to 14.

Five people one of them confirmed and four suspected to be suffering from swine flu died in Aurangabad at the government medical college and hospital (GMCH) and three (H1N1 confirmed case) lost their lives in the Latur division in the last 36 hours.

"Since April this year, swine flu has claimed 13 people in Latur division alone," said Ashfaq Ahmed, assistant director of health services (Latur).

"About 15 throat swabs were sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune, of which we received reports in six cases including one patient, who was found negative, and was discharged," said PL Gattani, resident medical officer, GMCH. At present, four patients are being treated along with five other suspected cases at the GMCH.

Two of the patients with suspected swine flu symptoms Savita Khirdikar (20) from Vaijapur and Ravindra Phuljhade (30) from Chikhli in Buldhana district, died on Thursday while three others succumbed on Wednesday. They have been identified as Savita Thakur (42) a resident of Shahgad in Ambad taluka, Sanjay Shevale (30), a resident of Dhavalapurin in Badnapur taluka and Chandrakant Thorat (38), a resident of Kannad.

Gattani said the GMCH received reports in six cases from the NIV, and of them five were declared positive, including Savita Thakur, who died on Wednesday.

Of the nine patients being treated at the GMCH, four are positive and the swabs have been sent in the others cases. He said that the hospital administration has a good stock of Tamiflu tablets and the vaccines are also ready to be offered to high-risk groups.

The Latur division of the health department reported more deaths than Aurangabad division. According to Ashfaq Ahmed, since April this year, 16,261 patients were screened, 205 of them were found positive, of which 183 were discharged, while 10 patients are still being treated at the isolated wards in the civil hospitals in the division.

He said that since April 2010, Latur district recorded two deaths due to swine flu, Beed district three while seven died of H1N1 in Nanded district. No deaths were reported from Osmanabad district, though 10 H1N1-positive patients are being treated at the civil hospital there. He said 3,560 patients were given Tamiflu tablets.

"A total of 14,024 people were screened for the symptoms in Aurangabad, Jalna, Parbhani and Hingoli districts since April 2010, of them 109 were given Tami flu tablets. At present, 15 patients are being treated at different hospitals, including the GMCH", said A L Deshpande, the in-charge deputy director of health services, Aurangabad.

Swine flu infection rate at 40%, alert sounded
Umesh Isalkar, TNN, Aug 5, 2010, 01.34am IST

PUNE: National Institute of Virology (NIV) has advised people to be alert and take precautionary measures to ward off swine flu as the infection rate has risen to 40% now.

''There has been a significant rise in the number of people suffering from the H1N1 influenza this year compared to 2009, when the rate was between 15% and 25%. However, it has already touched 40% now with a spurt in cases during the second wave. Precaution is the key to protection from the infection,'' NIV director AC Mishra told TOI on Wednesday.

''We, at the NIV, have been receiving about 200 throat swab samples from all over Maharashtra daily. Many of these are coming from far flung areas that remained unscathed last year. There has been an increase in the number of cases,'' he said.

Elaborating, Mishra said, ''The pandemic H1N1 virus has become a dominant strain now,'' he said.

Six nursing students catch swine flu

Express News Service
First Published : 07 Aug 2010 04:27:06 AM IST
Last Updated : 07 Aug 2010 09:33:01 AM IST

HYDERABAD: The dreaded swine flu is not showing any signs of abating. Panic gripped the medical staff at the Gandhi General Hospital with six nursing students testing positive for the infection. Besides, a 32-year-old woman from Kurnool succumbed to the deadly influenza while being shifted to Hyderabad today.

Dr Ch Jayakumari, Hyderabad district health and medical officer, said 15 fresh cases were reported today while 39 suspected patients were screened in the twin cities. Of the 15, six are nursing students aged between 20 and 25, five are from Malakpet (two women and three men) and two each are from the Apollo and AP Chest Hospital.

A woman patient from Eruru village in Chippagiri mandal of Kurnool district died succumbed while shifting to the city. Doctors said she had been suffering from high fever for 10 days and got admitted to a hospital in Kurnool two days ago. She was referred to the AP Chest Hospital for tests as her health began deteriorating fast.

Since January, 22 people died of swine flu and 217 tested positive for the infection.

Health officials said since the virus had become endemic, preventive measures had to be taken on a warfooting.

Health minister D Nagendar expressed concern that several patients were coming for treatment at an advanced stage, mostly after developing secondary infections. Speaking to reporters here today, the minister urged the patients to take only prescribed medicines.

Nagendar informed that 16 teaching hospitals, 20 Vaidya Vidhana Parishad hospitals, five area hospitals and 44 private hospitals have been recognised for providing treatment for swine flu. They have been equipped with ventilators, isolated wards and medicines and experienced doctors.

Since January, 2,489 patients had been screened and 217 found positive. On Thursday, 62 persons were screened and 21 were found positive, he informed. Most of the cases were being reported from Hyderabad and Vizag. Those with 'compromised immunity' like pregnancy, lactation stage and diabetic patients should take extra care if they contracted flu. Last year, swine flu cases came from foreign countries. But this year the virus had become endemic, health secretary PV Ramesh said. Many diarrhoea cases too were being reported, he said and added that the panchayat raj and municipal administration departments had been requested to take preventive measures.
