Sudarshan Shakti': Army's BIGGEST war games to date

With frontline IAF fighter aircraft such as the Sukhoi-30, AWACS and UAVs providing live feed of war games to battle field commanders, army is testing its war-fighting doctrine in the Barmer-Jaisalmer sector.

Sixty thousand troops and 300 tanks are participating in the exercise codenamed 'Sudarshan Shakti', aimed at strengthening war fighting skills of army's Southern Command and IAF's South Western Air Command by bringing together all elements including air power on one single platform, army officials said.

Apart from 120 artillery guns and an array of missiles and rockets, the exercise involves operation by aircraft such as Su-30 MKI, Jaguars, Mig-27 and Mig-21 AWACS and helicopters.

It will also put to test the newly-inducted communication and battlefield surveillance radars by integrating them with all the war fighting assets of the army and the IAF, they said.

Defence forces have inducted several new systems in the area of artillery, fire control system, battlefield surveillance, air support. During this exercise we will validate their integration in the new environment, the officials said.

Spread over the "huge geographical area" in the deserts of Barmer, Jaisalmer, Pokhran and Pachparda, the exercise will ensure infusion of latest technology with the weapons and troops while providing a real-time information of the battle front to the field commanders, they said.

why they dont go for arjun ???
Arjun would have definitely participated. Well if DRDO is so keen to put it up why do not they cover these exercises themselves rather than paying unaccounted hefty sum to defence journalists ?

When you validate new concepts, structures and doctrinal aspects, readiness takes a back seat. For readiness one has the Mobilisation Exercises.

:frusty: are you saying T72 is better then Arjun, plus if you dont know, DRDO cannot pay anything without approval and every thing is audited by CAG. Believe me no one in GOI like CAG.

lets not derail this thread.

Only 4 batteries can control an area of 25km of radius which is a lot. So yes 120 guns are more than enough for this kind of exercise.

Operation Sudarshan Shakti in Dec

Close to 300 tanks and 250 heavy artillery guns will blaze fire for 15 days in the western front next month as the Army and Indian Air Force (IAF) would engage in a massive war-game, Operation Sudarshan Shakti, in the desert.
The exercise would help the Army's Bhopal-based 21 Corpse to validate some of the new technologies it acquired in the last four years since its last major exercise, Dakshin Shakti.

The guns and tanks will be handled by 15000 troops from 21 Corpse, who would be supported by the IAF's south-western command. The 15-day exercise would commence on December 1.

The exercise would take place in a theater of 175 km x 150 km area covering Barmer, Jaisalmer, Pokhran and Pachpadra, said an officer from 21 Corpse.

Both T-90 and T-72 tanks along with heavy duty guns would be in action in the exercise, the built up for which had began since September end.

Senior officials in the Army headquarters, however, ruled out any connection between the exercise and the recent developments across the border as the exercise was planned two-three years ago.

Pakistani government has been duly notified about the war game, which would take place 150-200 km away from the border. While the exercise will be based on the integrated theatre battle concept, its main purpose is to validate the new technologies like digitised control of artillery fire, battlefield surveillance and other equipment, which was acquired in the last four years.

None were tested in an integrated manner in a battlefield scenario although individually they pass the muster. This is the first time that the armed forces are going to test its new capability-based tactics in a battlefield scenario.

Under the new war-fighting concept, the entire combat resources and support elements will be managed through a single command centre at Pachpadra. President and Supreme Commander of the armed forces Pratibha Patil and Defence Minister A K Antony will witness the exercise on December 5.

The exercise is conducted within strike crops, I doubt Arjun is involve, the new tactics are gained from UK tour..

Please read this line and it mentions that 120 artillery guns are being used. Seeing this only I asked for photos of them.

Approximately 50,000 troops along with T-90, T-72, Arjun tanks and BMPs will carry out simulated assaults on their objectives with artillery and IAF providing the support. According to an Army statement today, "This exercise will be a trendsetter for the Integrated Theatre Concept. The transformation of the force is at making the Army a more agile, versatile, lethal and networked force. In this exercise, we will be trying out new structures, strategies, and test beds of an integrated, seamless air-land battle."
