Stop new nuclear projects, Aruna Roy urges Sonia Gandhi

NEW DELHI: National Advisory Council member Aruna Roy has asked the chairperson Sonia Gandhi to stop the installation and commission of new nuclear projects, including the one at Kudankulam.

Adding her voice to protestors at the Tamil Nadu site, Roy in a letter addressed to Sonia said, "The prime minister's recent remarks about the liability issue related to reactors 3 and 4 at the Kudankulam nuclear power plant has brought out the lack of clarity regarding the liability issue related to reactors 1 and 2, which are to be commissioned soon."

Roy said she had visited the site and met the people, "All of them expressed anguish and dismay at the government's insistence on going ahead with the plant, turning a deaf ear to their legitimate concerns of safety and survival."

She noted that "many of them had police cases against them for expressing dissent. This included charges as serious as sedition, and waging war against the state".

She wrote, "People are no longer ignorant of the costs that are paid by them in terms of irreversible damage to health and genetic distortion. This is reflected in the continued resistance to nuclear plants at Jaitapur, Gorakhpur, Chutka, Banswara, Haripur, Rawatbhata and in Kudankulam."

Asking for a review of the costs and threats from nuclear power plants, Roy wrote, "There has to be a realistic cost benefit analysis, taking all these factors into consideration while examining alternative sources of safe, free and friendly forms of renewable energy, including wind and solar energy."

Referring to the CAG report which had criticized the functioning of Atomic Energy Regulatory Board, the NAC member wrote, "The demand for information and re-evaluation cannot be deemed sedition and war against the state. There is nothing sinister in the questions raised by ordinary people of the area about their safety, and the well being of future generations."

Why dont NAC members suggest something more urgent/useful for India such as a strict 2 child policy for all citizens. With a population that continues to climb the graph where are we going to get food, education, housing, energy etc for the masses.

The National Advisory Council (NAC) of India is an advisory body set up to monitor the implementation of the UPA government's manifesto, the Common Minimum Programme(CMP). It is a brainchild of Congress party president, Sonia Gandhi. It is also informally called as UPA's Planning Commission for social agenda. NAC is also called as Shadow Cabinet. On 23 March 2006, Sonia Gandhi had resigned from the post of chairmanship of the NAC after Office of profit controversy. On 29 March 2010, she was back as the chairperson of NAC.

So the brainchild has probably started their brain fart now.

If there is so much pressure on the govt for closing nuclear plants now, imagine how much pressure there will be if there is a nuclear accident in India. The only way we can sustain nuclear power plants in India is by not having accidents. I hope everybody realizes that and acts accordingly. We need safe plants in India, otherwise, all the investment in the nuclear field will go down the drain.

This is checks and balances in action. It has been put into place for a reason, and it is doing exactly why it was created.

I am sure people will keep Bhopal in mind. Aruna Roy is not Arundhati Roy. She is doing a fine job, so let her do her job.

Stop all nuke power plants = people are not exposed to radiation :D

Stop thermal power plants = No environmental and air pollution :yey:

Stop industrial development = No income inequality :bplease:

Environmentalists won't encourage family planning because their aim is to force us to import more oil from Gulf, gas from America and solar panels from China. Their aim is to maximise consumption and minimize production.

The main demand of Kudankulam protest leader Udaykumar is to convert nuclear plants to gas based plants. His aim is to help America get maximum benefit from shale gas boom. He is claiming that earthquakes may cause radiation leakage. But he is hiding the fact that shale gas exploration is causing earthquakes. He is claiming that nuclear plants may cause problems to fishes. But he is hiding the fact that billions of fishes die every year due to oil spill from offshore oil fields and ships. If he is really worried about life of people in Kudankulam then why he is not discouraging people from fishing? What will happen if they face tsunami while fishing?

All power plants including solar and wind are facing protest from environmentalists. If solar and wind power projects are safe then why environmental terrorists are not letting solar panel companies to mine rare earth metals and minerals. Almost all rare earth metals used for making solar panels and wind turbines are imported from China. Due to high export tax of rare earth metals in China, many Indian companies stopped manufacturing solar panels and start importing solar panels from China.

When environmentalists protest against any particular power project they claim that the particular power project will produce only less power and will not solve our power crises. But they hide the fact that they are against almost all projects. All projects have some risks. 25000 people died due to gas leakage during Bhopal gas tragedy. What will happen if people start protesting against all chemical factories due to fear of gas leakage?

if only she can provide a perfect alternative then indian governement shall think of altering the project, or else will she bring power supply from her backyard gobergas chambers or what. we are in the middle of world of compitation, we can't change the usual path unless we is a proper and mind blowing invention to bring a revolutionary change. so that the rest of the world will follow us. and we also have to keep in mind the just modifying the project will cost a lot of money and time, now here you are talking about a complete new infrastructure for the new technology. so any country will find it difficult to make drastic changes. but here we don't have an alternative in picture.
india is sufffering from power shortage and still lot of remote villages in india don't have power supply yet at the maximum effort india is looking at all the type of energy productions. apart from nuke reactors, we have lot of power plants which uses coal as fuel and this also makes lot of pollution, now a days environment activists have reduced there objections on air pollutions. coz air pollution is a result of each and every persons daily needs. later on in future activist might stop protesting against nuke reactors also.
we have seen and still seing the impact of powergrid failure in northern india, and india choose to look towards non proliferation treaty only when india had no other ways to satisfy it's basic energy needs and said it need uranium for it's civilian use, that's civilian power purpose.

talking about any other power supply technologies has more or less same damaging impacts of human or any other creators.

if you take wind turbines, they will effect the cloud formation and might not bring much rain baring clouds. wind turbines near residential places have complains like the turbines cause low-frequency noise causing a variety of health ailments ranging from hypertension to sleeplessness and nosebleeds in children. A University of California, Santa Barbara, stud identified the basis for that opposition. Wind power in general has overwhelming support – roughly 72 percent of the public say they support it. But when a site is close to home, support drops to 53 percent, researchers found.

Solar thermal installations at deserts or high temperature regions, for example, can require significant quantities of water to be heated to produce energy and water comes at a high in this locations.

Opposition towards biofuels, particularly ethanol, a federally-mandated fuel additive, is a little more complex, The opposition is based, in part, on economics and the impact on food prices, notably corn-based commodities. These would convert agricultural residues such as corn stover, wheat straw, and sugar cane bagasse and energy crops such as switchgrass into fermentable sugars.

Geothermal energy is commonly praised as a "green" alternative to environmentally unfriendly power sources such as fossil fuels, Iceland which has one of the worlds biggest geothermal energy is also pumping hydrogen sulphide in to the environment, iceland's few cities nearby the plant are adviced the town's residents to start taking magnesium and iodide supplements to counteract the health impacts of the power plant's sulphur (hydrogen sulphide) pollution. " the pollution is of such quantity that the human body needs those two materials in order to resist the effects,"
Geothermal fluids contain high concentrations of heavy metals and other toxic elements, including radon, arsenic, mercury, ammonia and boron, which are damaging to the freshwater systems into which they are released as waste water, recently Two new unplanned effluent lagoons were recently discovered close to the plant, where waste water from geothermal pumping had leaked out onto the surface. These lakes can be very dangerous to local freshwater systems,

Hydropower is such a time bomb which alters the movement of tectonic plates of earth and the million gallons of water tamed and stored at a place might cause man-made earthquakes very easily. and the dam occupies a large Sq Kms of land to store water which will make the 100s villages to be moves forcibly. the raise of water level will damage the ecology in the area and species near by the river.

some renewable projects could have a negative impact on air and water quality & and endangered or threatened species.

Aruna Roy addressing a very Minuit problem, which can't be avoided. i say whatever we have as any power source or any deed we do will damage the environment, only when the world adopt the "AVATAR" movie style of civilization, then we are talking sense here. but it's very much a fantasy. Now you can't stop producing power from this plants. if it happens, then India will go back to 19thcentury life style with kerosene lamps and candles at night. and power timing will replace current power cut times. and that's a way to go, to stop India from development, and in this fast world countries will leave india far behind again and we will soon going to be underdogs.
so Aruna Roy need to address the whole world rather then addressing india or sonia gandhi in particular.
The world needs to figure out new ways of generating clean energy,

The day I mean to say stop all nuke plants and stop all thermal plants, I will make it explicit and unambiguous. At this point, you quoted post #9. Have you seen me say that, or asking for ensuring safety in nuke plants is same as stopping all nuke plants? What next, if I ask you to put on your seat belts while driving, you are going to accuse me of preventing you from driving?

This isn't 80s, it's 2012, engineers are having far more better technologies now. And govt has a lot of open spaces where they can easily setup such plants. Such extreme socialist mentality will never let our nation grow. Nuke power is future, we don't have much coal or gas for producing power. We need alternatives and this is the best alternative available now.
