ISLAMABAD: Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa arrived here Friday on a three-day state visit to Pakistan to further strengthen political, economic and defence ties between the two countries.

He was received at Chaklala Air Base by Chairman Senate Farooq H Naek, Minister for States and Frontier Regions (SAFRON) Eng Shaukat Ullah, and other officials.

The Sri Lankan president is visiting Pakistan on the invitation of President Asif Ali Zardari.

A formal welcome ceremony for the guest would be held at the President House this afternoon when he arrives there to meet President Zardari.

During his visit, President Rajapaksha, besides meeting with President Asif Ali Zardari, is also scheduled to meet Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani.

The talks between the two countries would cover political, defense, cultural, tourism, media, economic, business and trade relations. A number of bilateral agreements are also expected to be signed between the two sides.

US$ 200 million from the Government of Pakistan

The Government of Pakistan has agreed to extend an Export Credit Facility of US$ 200 million through the State Bank of Pakistan. This was agreed during the visit of Pakistani President to Sri Lanka in November 2010.

An amount of US$ 150 million of this credit, is to be utilized for the construction of Housing Units and the balance US$ 50 million for the importation of livestock, plant and machinery from Pakistan.

The Loan agreement will be signed with the Government of Pakistan, during current State visit of Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa to Pakistan.

It is not like they cannot afford anything. They are a far better nation and are considered pretty good in terms of economy despite being tiny. The problem is, Rajapakse wants to "balance it out" with us. He thinks that by appeasing China and Pakistan simultaneously, he can get the best of stuff he wants from us while be free to slip anything in our kitty and get away with it.

That's a big mistake he's making.

If they had been sensible to support us in the 71 war instead of allowing PN ships to refuel, we'd have been their strong partners. Now see where they have gone: killing Tamils, trying big games etc.
