Anti India sentiments existed in Sri Lanka even before India sent any sort of help to the Sri Lankan Tamils. Sri Lanka's hate towards India was an extension of Sinhalese people's hate towards the Tamils.

Sri Lanka openly sided with Pakistan during 1965 and 1971 Indo-Pak wars. Sri Lanka provided supplies and fuel to the Pakistani ships/aircraft.

Sri Lanka was negotiating a deal with the US which would have allowed the US to establish a naval base in Northern Sri Lanka, so close to Tamilnadu.

This was the tipping point and India responded by providing open support to the LTTE.

Supporting LTTE from beginning was wrong idea. India always feared establishment of free Tamil country may result in secession of Tamilnadu. So India actually wanted to give Tamils autonomy, but SL army then was so weak Tamil rebels surpassed SL army in number. India had other no option apart from going against rebels.

That is a wrong statement. For the entire duration of the armed struggle SLA was far ahead of LTTE both in numbers and weapons. The only thing holding back SLA was the lack political will and chronic carelessness of the army. Even in 1986, Sri Lanka army was poised to annihilate LTTE completely in Velvetiturai until India intertwined to stop fighting on behalf of LTTE. India didn't want to see LTTE get powerful nor did they want to see them annihilated.
