June 25, Colombo: Sri Lanka recalled the two military officers who were enrolled in a training program at the Defence Services Staff College (DSSC) in Wellington in Tamil Nadu, back to the island due to the protests mounted by the pro-Eelam outfits in the Indian state.

Sri Lankan government refused the Indian government offer to transfer the two officers to a different facility in India saying that it will not benefit the Sri Lankan defense services.

The two officers, Wing Commander M. S. Bandara Dissanayaka and Major C. S. Harischandra Hettiarachchige, who were undergoing a one-year training course in the DSSC from May 27 returned to the country Tuesday.

Due to security concerns the Indian Government had offered to transfer the two officers from DSSC Wellington to Higher Defence Management Course (HDMC) in the College of Defence Management, Secundrabad.

Appreciating the Indian government's offer, Sri Lankan government said it kindly declines the alternative since the Higher Defence Management Course, which is normally followed by senior officers in the rank of Colonel, is a higher course in scope and not in line with the initial purpose of sending the two officers for training in India.

"Moreover, a higher course with an entirely different scope would neither benefit the officers nor the Sri Lankan Armed Forces in immediate future employment of these officers," the government said.

The Sri Lankan government reiterated that "this withdrawal does not in any way hamper the growing relationship and training partnership between the Armed Forces of India and Sri Lanka."

Sri Lankan military personnel have been receiving training at Indian facilities for over four decades and the Indian Armed Forces are key partners in professional career development of officers, soldiers, sailors and airmen of the Sri Lanka Armed Forces.

However the pro-Eelam outfits joined by the Tamil Nadu state government led by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa have been protesting the training given to Sri Lankan military personnel at the Indian defense facilities in that state.

Indian government has succumbed to the political pressures from Tamil Nadu and the training programs offered to Sri Lankan personnel in those facilities have been curtailed.

In the wake of the opposition from Tamil Nadu government, Pakistan and China have stepped in to provide the military training to Sri Lankan defense personnel.
